should i worry at all about switching from regular oil to synthetic? from what i've heard it shouldn't be a problem, but just wanted to make sure. by the way, i've got a stock 52,000 mile long block, if that makes any difference.
thanks all.

No worries. The only thing you should worry about is what to do with the longer service intervals and the money saved. Oh, and the added hp won't hurt either.

not to mention how it prolongs the life of the motor.

No problems switching. Ive heard if you have 100k+ miles, you might get an oil leak. I did it on my old engine at about 60k miles, no probs.

Also, if theres a Cosco around your area, you can pick up a case of mobil1 for under 20 dollars. Where as autozone sells it for 35+.

Yes, synthetic oil will protect your engine better for longer, and will increase horsepower. The only problems associated with switching to synthetics is chance of oil leak; this only occurs on a very high mileage engine or a beat engine.

Yes you will be fine. While your at it, change your rear end gear oil to synthetic, and tranny fluid as well. Should be good for a couple ponies, as well as better protection!

I have interesting links about this exact topic. I recommend RedLine fluids/oils in your diff and tranny.

Lets see em, im interested

I have a ford dyno book, that dynoed a stock 5.0 to the tune of 2 peak HP and 4 peak ft/lbs more with just the synthetic swap.. The HP increase was a nice 2-3 throughout the whole rpm band.

Hey every little bit counts right?

I don't have any links but i have heard that there has been a few dyno tests with Royal purple where they switched to all synth. throughout the whole car (gear lube, tranny, engine, etc.... Made like 15 horse off of it on a camero...

Ever sence i read that i have used royal purple... This isn't that test but it has a few others on it... http://crestindustriesinc.com/products/royalpurple/royaldyno.htm

He who asks...

This first one is just a brief summary of benefits of synthetic Tranny fluid:
http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/redtech4.htm

This one is much more in depth:
http://www.stealth316.com/2-gearoil-tech.htm

This is an actual oil tech forum (wierdos):
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

This is probably the most interesting, and telling web site on synthetic oil. It is a page of engineers doing a massive study on just how long an engine can go on different synthetic brands without a change. Everybody should read this one:
http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html

Enjoy! That last one will take some time out of your schedule, so be ready.
