Removing riveted bracket under console for carpet install?

I'm installling new carpet today and the old grey is just about ready to come out. The only thing holding me up is the metal bracket under the rear of the console. It is over the carpeting and has rivets holding it down.




Am I supposed to drill the rivets and find another way to hold it down for the install? I read a lot of posts about removing and installing carpet and this problem hasn't come up before. Anyone else deal with this?

Was this part of the ebrake recall fix?

My carpet came out without having to remove that thing. There should be a seem underneath it. That bracket went on before carpet did. Once your interior is out, make sure all wires are out of the carpet and just yank it out!

I drilled those out. All that bracket does is hold the center console, has nothing to do with the ebrake.

Those are "blind" rivets, which means they have a bar and a steel collar inside. The best way (easiest on your drill bits) is the grind (sand) the head of the rivet about half way, hit it with a punch to push the bar out, then drill it out. But yes just a drill will work.

why not just cut a slit in the carpet

x2 just trim the carpet around it that way the bracket stays where it is

youll never see it hidden under the console and the carpet is molded to the shape of the car so its not like its gonna move around

thats what idid when i removed my carpet to clean it when i bought the my cobra

I decided to cut the carpet as least as possible and maneuver it around the bracket. As I pulled on the bracket barely, it pulled out the rivets. At least the bracket is out of the way for now. Now I just have to fasten it somehow when I'm done.

The carpet is coming around nicely. I just have to do a little more trimming on the sides. I also have new seats to install after this. Pics will follow.
