removing very heavy oxidation

Is there some way to remove heavy oxidation... this thing is badly dried out. Looks like a coral reef has grown over the hood. I tried rubbing compound & was able to remove the crust over a small area and it looks ok. But that took about an hour & I had to scratch most of it off with my thumbnail. There's gotta be an better way.

Oh yeah, it's on a beater 86 pickup, not the Mustang.
 
If it looks cracked you kinda have to repaint. If the paint is still smooth but its chalky you can bring it back with compounds. If its rough you'd have to remove so much paint you might goto primer. Wet sanding would be the only thing aggresive enough to get the surface ready, then through the polishing process you'll probably have nothing left. I'd need some pics to really say for sure though. :shrug:
