on my 90 lx its has a few small spots of rust. Mainly on the fenders. Not very big, about an inch long on the top of the wheel well on all 4. Its not through, just bubbling off the paint. How should i go about fixing this? Just sand it off and spray some primer on it? I really have no idea.

I don't know alot about it, but i know you have get get all of the rust or it will come back, my thoughts would be to remove any trim in the area, take off the area, sand down to bare metal, and put a good coat of primer on it, but i'm not a pro

Rust is a difficult problem. Much of your course of action depends on how long you plan to keep the car, what type of facilities and tools you have, and how long you want the repair to last. section repair is obviously the best solution but a lot of work. A quick repair tht sould last at least a couple years is to sand the rusty area down until you have good shiny metal all around it (you must remove all paint in the effected area) use a wire brush to get as much of the rust out as possible. Treat the area with jasco metal prep(available @ home depot for about ten bucks) allow to cure and prime w/rustolium red oxide primer. Depending on the amount of sheet metal damage use kitty hair or regular body filler befor regular primer and spot paint. If you are new to paint and body work many good books w/helpful color pictures are available at your local bookstore. Hope this helps!

You first must determine if the rust is coming through from the backside, or is surface rust. If the paint is bubbling, then it's likely the rust has come through to the surface of the metal from the backside. There's no easy way to repair that from the surface. You'll likely need to cut out all the affected area, and weld in replacement pieces -- then do the body work to smooth/paint everything. The bigger issue is this -- if it's actually coming through the body from behind in some areas, there is usually MUCH more rust in other areas that hasn't come all the way through yet. If the car has spent it's life enduring winters with salted roads -- the 'cancer' is liable to be widespread. I'd get the car up in the air and take a real good look at things from the underside/backside. It may not be worth your time or trouble to try and repair.

Where do you/the car live? Do you know the history of the car (geographic location)?

....ooooh, not so good. Get it up in the air and take a real close look with a good body shop person. I suspect, like an iceberg, the majority of the problems are 'under the surface'....

im convinced MODOT doesnt know how to use its salt correctly, the more you look, the more rust youre going to find. nature of the beast in this part of the country im afraid. i just got mind about 4 months ago, everytime i look i see a new spot of rust (or other little imperfections that a previous owner just painted over). luckily, most of it looks like it can be fixed easily with a grinder, welder, and some primer.

Actually some of the chemicals they're using on the roads these days are even more corrosive than good old fashioned 'salts' of the past.

I have a similar issue w/ one of my quarter panels. I plan to replace the metal so that it's done right. My question is if there are replacement patch panels for the top of the wheelwell? If not, what are some other options? Thanks.

I'm watching this thread with great interest. You body body guys need to get your your buckets in here and teach class. I've got a couple trouble areas that I need to tackle this spring before they become REAL issues. This is probably the first thread I've subscribed to in more than 6 months.

I'm in as well. The reason i'm parting my car is that, with the rust areas, i dont know its worth more than the parts. If i can tackle a few areas, cheaply, maybe i can save it.

heres a nice little article showing a repair on a door bottom. they use a welder (which is really the right way) but there is panel bonding adhesive which ive heard works ok if you or a buddy dont have a welder.

http://www.autobodystore.com/door_rust.htm

theres many many many more resources out on the net about it, do a google search and youll find a lot of different techniques out there. actually putting a patch in isnt that difficult, getting it in the right shape is the hard part. luckily ive got a buddy parting out an 86, ill be getting the doors from it (my pasenger side has holes in it already) and maybe a fender (my driverside is bowed out a bit). all for about $50 a panel. if you go to the junker, you may find similar pieces, and you can cut out your rust spots, trace the outline on a piece of paper, and cut a patch from a rust-free donor and weld/bond it in.
