I have a 68 mustang coupe and the right rear axle is bent. i am going to need to replace it. is there a way i can tell what axle is in there ie 31 spline 28 spline 8 inch 8.8 or 9 inch?
You can just count the splines to determine that, if they are original they are 28s though. There was no 8.8 in 1968, so if you have a small block V8 you have an 8-inch, if you have a 428 then (other than me being jealous) have a 9-inch. Both the 8 and the 9 came with 28 spline axles. I've got to ask though, how on earth did you BEND an axle? I've seen then strip or even twist but bend?
BTW, I've got a set of original 9-inch 28s sitting in my garage that I can't figure out what to do with (cheap!) now that my locker has 31s.
oh i jsut bought my car about 3 months ago and it was bent when i bought it. the body is in fairly good condition and i planned on refurbishing the rear end soon anyways along with my engine compartment and motor. so i figured what the hey. its a 68 that orriginally was brittany blue brittanic has a c4 and orriginally had a j code 302 4v. but yeah im guessing the moron backed into a curb or something so whatever. yeah but i put the car on jackstands took off the wheel and bolted the drum back up and when the car is running in drive i used another jackstand and a screwdriver. you can see that it was bent to some degree. how much you want for those axles?
Yes....if it is same year/vehicle. The axles didn't know which rearend they were installed in so you can save extra 8 inch axles even if you upgrade to a 9 inch of the same housing size.

I thought so but wanted to hear the second opinion. The loose 28 spline axles I have are DEFINITELY out of a 9-inch, thats where the 31 spline axles went,
Funny you mention the 8-inch...I've got a complete drum-to-drum 8-incher taking up space in my garage. But it doesn't take up any more room than the 289 and C4 I have stitting in the corner too

I swapped my original 8inch for a 9 inch out of a 70 mustang. The axles were exactly the same. I pulled the ones out of the 8 and slide them right in. Bearings and all were the same. You can get moser axles from summit and places like that with bearings and everything installed. Literally just open the box, pull yours out, slide the new ones in. Just tell em the bearing size (diameter), spline count, length (from splines to edge of plate), and such. Best way to do it is to pull yours out, get your micrometer and a tape measurer and give em a call. They will walk you through it. Was one of the best $300 I spent on the car. SOOO much smoother.
