Hey I was gonna send my car to a guy to get rotisserie mounted & media blasted & etch primered for about $2500, but, the closer I get to it, It doesn't sound like such a good deal. ABout 4 years ago a dude would do it for $400 (w/out primer). I live in NW Florida, and don't mind driving a ways ($100 in fuel) to save a ton of jack (E.g. Mobile, Jacksonville, New Orleans). Anybody know of anywhere that can do it for a man on a military (E-5) budget? I also have a friend who has his own industrial grade media blaster, and could do most of it myself, just can't find any plastic media round these parts. Thanks for any guidance.

im no expert here, but ive been looking into this a bit lately...if ur gonna blast it, the rotisserie is ur best bet to rid yourself of the most remaining media heartache. The shop i plan to take mine to this coming winter spends a couple hrs alone afterwards rotating and air guning it to get as much out as possible, and i have no doubt the media will stil turn up...

depending upon how much paint and gunk is on the car i was seeing quotes from reputable shops from $500-1200 for the shell and ~80 a piece (fender, door, trunklid, etc) following that. So your price doesnt seem too far off. This shop also offers chem dipping which was ~1000-2300 and ~100 a piece. this was a good option to penetrate parts outta reach of a blaster, but also concerns that the enclosed are would now be bare and suceptable to corrosion (in this case there are dippers that do a finalzied layer to coat this, but just more $ of course)

Do not use eastwood for blasting supplies...they are EXTREMELY overpriced. If you are anywhere near a major city, there is not a doubt in my mind that someone will sell plastic (silica sand) media. Having your car blasted is great, but be forwarned that if it is not done by a professional, body panels can easily be warped or blasted through!

For someone that asked what media blasting is: A high pressure compressor is hooked up to a media gun and a tube from the media gun goes into media. Media could be sand, walnut shells, glass beads, etc. The high pressure from the compressor creates a vacuum and picks the media up and shoots it out of the gun. The high speed of the media "blasts" off rust, paint, crud, etc. I described a basic, do it yourselfer, setup. They get more complex. Sandblasting is the same as media blasting, sand is the media being used. The process is very very messy as the media goes everywhere. The military has high dollar blasters that can blast a complete AAV in a few hours.

Yeah, There's a guy about 7 1/2 hours away near Tampa that can do it, but, the price is the same, and I've heard horror stories of that stuff rearing it's ugly head and ruining paint. I guess it's a gamble either way, as I'm sure plastic media will be falling outta by coupe for the next 20 years!:)

I use a plastic media blaster at work all the time, I can dial that thing in so precise that I can remove paint and leave the primer. Pressure is key. i just did the rear valance for my 72 mach 1, and had to keep the pressure at 38 lbs. to avoid bending it. However I have had best luck at between 50-75 lbs. for most panels. Remember, sand particles tend to be round, while plastic media is available is round(beads), triangles, and chips. DO NOT BUY FROM EASTWOOD! We currently pay around 300.00 for a DRUM of media(enough to do about 3 cars!) Unfortunately I cant do a chassis as our cabinet is only 4x6 ft. But I'm still contemplating trying it in my paint booth(with a monster shop vac, of course). :D I think 2000.00 for blasting and priming( considering the cleanup time) is a reasonable estimate. Good Luck!
