What is your opinion on shortening and resplining 31 spline axles? Motor is probly 310-320ish. 3.73 gears and a gear type LSD like the tru-trac if it makes any diffrence.

look at the axle, if it tapers down behind the splines then you need to shorten the axle enough to get past the taper. if it doesnt taper, then you are good to go.

You can only shorten and respline certain ford axles. most aftermarket axles have cut splines so can be shorten and resplined. If you want ford 31 spline axles for a stock width 65-66 mustang then unless you find the rare lincoln 31 spline short axle then your only choice will be new axles. The only company you should talk to about resplined stock axles is curries.

Might look at the price of the respline..if it's close to the price of new axles, just go custom. Doesnt resplining screw up the heat treating when the new splines get cut?

^^^ exactly why i'm asking. I'm looking at putting a 9" from an early 80's F150 in the stang. The axles (stock) are the same diameter all the way, no taper.

Go ahead and call up Currie Enterprises. My rear end is narrow 1/2' both sides and it was less expensive to get new axles cut to length with new bearing etc.

how long are the splines? on my mosers they were 4" so I had them cut 2" and narrowed the rear 2". no need to respline.
as long as you dont wled or put a flame to the axles to heat them your good. thats what moser says.

Im pretty sure you can not respline truck axles to fit a car. the shaft diameter is too big and once you cut them down your left with soft cast iron for the splines. That and the bolt circle, register and flanges will need to be changed. You can either buy resplined axle from currie if they have them or new axles from any of the axle companies.

What is that rare Lincoln? Never know when I might run across one.

Thats pretty much what I was told from currie. Know where I can find a decent street axle on the cheap?

with the limited types of axle that can be shorted for a 65 only the short 31 spline axle is easy to make the long axle has to be a short 31 spline axle out of a certian lincoln of wich I dont know of the year or model. The bolt pattern in the same but may require some flange work to fit a mustang. My resplined axles are a direct fit for the stock mustang 28 spline in that the stock brakes and wheels fit. I paid 175 for them 8 years ago, but I see sets for sale at almost every swap meet. AT the time I was trying to be sneeky having stock looking axles,, but now would rather pay for quality steel 31 spline axles from strange or curries. Probbaly the best price would be from superior if they make them for a 65. That or stock 66 axles or granada 8" axles.
