Does the stock rev limiter choke off fuel or spark? Can a custom chip change this? Thanks.

cuts fuel. a chip should be able to change it, but i think most folks run an ignition box and dial in soft/hard limiters before 6250 (stock limiter).

Fuel, I would suggest an MSD box with a 6200 limiter. I plan to get one after my suspensions done, so the launches are safer (cutting spark is better than fuel).

What year/motor/tranny is your ranger? I have a 93 4 banger 5 speed and it cut out on me one night, but I know I had to been goin faster than 90 cause the speedo reads 85 and it was buried way down there for a while. I thought I finally blew er!

Where is the stock ignition box located on our cars? That's one thing I have never thought of. I've had motor/tranny/rearend out....everything but I've never seen the ignition box. Least not that I know of, is it in the dash?

My friend has a '98 4-banger ranger and it cuts out at 96 mph. He cruises on the highway at 94 mph everywhere he goes, its funny as hell.

sounds like the old VW buses - toss a brick on the gas pedal, sit back and wait.

Sorry, I thought since I wrote "cars" and started another paragraph you would of guessed I was talkin about the stang but......I know the Ranger is DIS, and I don't like it just cuz I can't play with the timing. I checked the timing one time and it said 20* when it should be 10*, I tryed both #1 wires and with the spout connector out and in, no difference, oh well, as long as she runs. The damn thing won't heat up in the winter, I've had three different thermostats in the truck and it just won't heat up, so I go through winter without a heater, which sucks in Ohio.

So my 93 GT doesn't have an ignition box or ??????

Your reading total timing (advanced). I think you are looking for 10* base timing? The computer will control all the timing advancements. I don't think there would be a spout, because you can't adjust the timing anyways, which is mainly what it is for....

And no, Mustangs don't have ignition boxes unless they are aftermarket, like MSD and the like....

I know the 01's cut fuel and it is quite shocking the first time it happens.

on many Direct ignition set ups, you can adjust the crank or cam trigger (whichever you have) to play with timing.

On night I was going 4400RPM in my explorer in OD. My speedo only goes to 85 also. I wish I could find a way to calculate the speed. The speedo was on D (for drive). LMAO.

how high did you rev it, and was it per the stock tach? the stockers are often off by quite a bit.....just a thought. people go through lots of work to remove/modify the stock limiter (burn a chip, etc)....

I have yet to ever bounce it off the rev limiter, and ive had it high in the rpms, enough to make me too uncomforble and back it down.

same here, I hit 7 grand on the stock tach in my GT doing a burnout a couple weeks ago...I just planted the gas and it started spinning and the tach flew up to 7000, i felt bad, but it didn't cut out. My stock LX 5.0 hasn't ever cut out that I know of either and i've had it mashed as well - neither have chips. The stock tach's must be off by a lot in both of them

The A9L & A9P computers cut fuel off to 1 injector at a time in a order that matched the firing order. That was supposed to be a soft rev limiter that caused things to slow down in an orderly fashion and not a sudden cut off.

now that is smart (not as smart as cutting spark, but smart for a fuel cut). on one of my older crotchrockets, the one and only time i hit the limiter (over 12K rpm), it was what i guess you would say is a hard limiter - i think it cut spark to all 4 pots, and about shot me off the front of the bike.
