it is probably the factory amplifier.

i believe its the factory amp. i didnt know what mine was either until i really crawled in there and looked. i just left it cause i got lazy doing my black interior swap.

You aren't talking about the blue one are you? Just in case, that's the control box for the speed control. The black one is for the radio. A lot of the radio amps were also located under the front passenger seat.

on a 88 vert? its mounted to a bracket that mounts to the center on the bottom of the floor in the middle of the dash.
