Actually, I've thought about the emissions thing before and to me it would make sense to have exemptions for automotive enthusiasts. IOW, if you have a primary vehicle and a secondary vehicle where you can prove the secondary vehicle accumulates less than XXXX amount of miles/year you're exempt from emissions testing on that secondary vehicle. Hell they could even provide a license plate sticker or a special license plate. Unfortunately, collectors plates in most states cannot be issued to vehicles made within the last 25 years.

MN removed the emissions testing requirement about 10 years ago, yet we still have very clean lakes, rivers, and air so I guess not having emissions testing here really has had little impact to the environment.

Man, this got good. I know exactly what Mike is talking about with the gross polluters-there are plenty of them here where I live. But most of them aren't hot rodders...they're busted a$$ old pontiacs and buicks billowing out clouds of oil smoke. Yes, most of the time it's a reality that lower income folks can't afford the new hotness, and drive the old and busted, but that doesn't mean they can't find something less disgusting to operate. But now we get into legislating common sense and we all know that just isn't a reality.

The whole emissions thing is starting to weigh a little more into the build of my vehicles because I don't want to have to go to pay someone off just to pass my car...and the first thing they look for in my neck of the woods is cats-even though my car is beyond 25 years old, they won't even look at it because it was cammed up a little and loud. I have thought about running a single 3.5" magnaflow cat after my turbo before I split it off to dual 3" pipes. I don't know what all I'd lose in the power department, but I want to be able to get it inspected anywhere instead of the alternative.

I know i'd gladly pay an extra fee per year not to have to worry about smog. Hell I already do it now...

Also seems like a good way for the gubberment to make extra coin.

Is it the government's right to decide which cars are and aren't safe to drive anymore? Yeah, those states without inspections do have crappier cars on the road, but those cars are cheaper to buy, too, and sometimes they are all their buyers can afford. State inspections force people to buy newer, cleaner cars, even when they can't really afford them.

And? A car doesn't have to be new to be able to pass emmissions as you well know. My concern for clean air and safe roads far outweigh my concern towards the affordability of the crap that fouls the air in the first place. Yeah, the govt should ( and does) mandate who gets to drive, if the only alternative to not driving, is some smoke spewing 1987 caprice.
State inspections don't force people to buy a new car, ( otherwise, all of the inspected mustangs on this site would fail). They force those that drive older cars to keep them maintained.

Dunno about your car, but mine passes the CA inspection and sniffer 100% , and legit too.

Also, the government, they're way to involved for everyone's own good.

And your point? My point was that old cars , (like your mustang) can pass emmissions despite their age . The "poor" folks that can't afford a new car don't have to trash the air because of it.
If the big bad gov doesn't administer it, who will?

Mike we don't need the government holding our hands telling us what we should and shouldn't be doing. I understand where you're coming from but how bout lets start with all those smoke stacks shooting God knows what in the air 24/7 365.

It's the Governments 'administering' that has got us into the deep dark hole we're in now. I'm glad that some of you haven't felt the sting of the recession. As for my family, we lost a vehicle to repo, got laid off (my fathers business is in severe jeapordy)lost nearly everything I've worked for 20 years now. Those years include service to my Country as a United States Marine

Please don't assume because I think the way I do doesn't mean I wasn't trashed by the recession as well. (my biz is directly tied to housing mkt)
2010 was so bad I went to work for autozone ( well for 3 days at least) i am lucky that we have a relatively low Debt ratio, else wise I'd be standing on the I state exit ramp w/ a cardboard sign.

Never pointed at you or anyone else. When I see people building cars though, I can only assume one has disposable income. Some here are working more hours than they know what to do with. That's good. Unfortunately I'm not in that situation. I dont need our government, county, state or federal throwing more of my money down the drain to catch a handful of gross polluters.

But people who drive crappy cars don't want to drive them. They have to drive them. To get to work. To make money. To eventually buy a newer, smoother, cleaner car without going into massive debt. I don't think the government should be a roadblock to financial responsibility.
