Ok finnaly got the pan off and the k member out on my 97 cobra. Found the number 3 cylinder the tabs on the bearing broke and the hearing was spinning inside the rod jurnol. My question is this bearing is only slighly worn mabe a few thousandths of an inch. Is this enough on these engines to make the noise of a rod knock? On the outside part of the bearing there is def wear down to the inside part of the coating in two dime size spots. Im just worried I may have two problems. Found no damage to cylinders no scoring I did find a little bit of aluminum shavings in the pan. Probably just the tabs that broke off of the bearings. Any way Just need to varify the noise part. Could a slighly worn/ spun , not completley destroyed bearing cause a rod knock?

Most definitely. If the bearing spun in the rod it's likely damaged too. Check for scoring and use an inside mic to check the big-end bore size. Any bluing on the rod indicating excessive heat? How's the crank journal?

The rod and journals have a tiny bit of scoring nothing to major. The crank and rods look good. There wasn't much if any playin the connecting rod before I removed the cap

If you want to fix this right you will need to go through the short block and have it all machined. Rods resized and crank turned or polished. Have the bores checked. You cannot check tolerances with your eye balls. If the bearing spun and the bearings have wear spots you have some major problems going on that need to be fixed right. You might be able to shade tree it all back together but it won't last long.

Just want to be able to drive it through the summer I only put 2000 miles on my vette a year the mustang will be less.. Over the winter I'm going to pull the engine and put in forged parts because the head gasket is leaking as well....plus the front end has parts from another car installed...some moron had his fun playing with this car.

Well if you want to chance it and install a new bearing is entirely up to you. I would however plastigauge it upon assembly. Just to make sure you have the correct clearances.
