Well id like to start off by saying that i am fairly new to engines, so i basically know just the basics (which i have learned from how stuff works.com and stangnet.com). My question is what is the difference between regular rocker arms and roller rockers? I understand that there is a difference is performance, and if i wanted to get roller rockers on my engine what would i have to do? Thanks.....

roller rockers use bearing at the pivot point and at the valve stem, regular rockers just slide metal to metal at the pivot and valve stem. thier purpose is to reduce friction. Installing them depends on the engine and type of rocker. It may be as easy as bolting them on or it may require drilling your head and putting in screw on rocker studds.

Well i have the edelbrock performer cam and heads.

And i forgot to add that it is a 1968 289 v8, with the stock rockers.

The stock rockers don't actually slide across the valve stem tip. They roll also, the contact surface is slightly curved and so it does roll across the tip too.There are two types of roller rockers available, there's also a stock type with roller tips in addition to the full roller types. The full rollers give you the best bang for the buck, the biggest frictional loss is in the pivot.

I read an article in HotRod once. They added parts and dynoed the engine to seel how much each was worth. There was no change when they put on the Roller Rockers. Not to say that they are not better, but 'power' gains would be neglible.

They basically reduce friction which lowers oil temp. and improves valve train geometry by reducing valve stem deflection against the valve guides which decreases guide wear. Less friction means more HP. But......if you install the wrong length push rods your guides will wear out in record time.
