Started out 2 days ago when the shifting seemed to start getting harder and harder to shift. I noticed the outer sheath had split. Finally today I get a break for lunch, so I head downtown to the auto parts store to pick up some supplies. Get back into the car and the shifter won't budge! Sure enough, the cable had ruptured through the sheath...pretty much the whole thing had come apart. I have the Steeda quadrant, firewall adjuster...etc...so I tried to mess around with it in an attempt to get it home. I spent an hour out there in the Advance auto parking lot, and all I did was end up with several SEVERE blisters on my hands. Believe me, they are BAD! I bought a cable there..odd...it came with an aluminum quadrant? Anyone need one? Anyhow...end up having to have the car towed to my house. Thank goodness for insurance.
I finally have the new cable installed and all looks well (except my hands).
While under there I decided to pull the speedo gear and see if I can find out why the speedo needle constantly bounces below 25mph.
It had a WHITE gear that we installed about 18 months ago...same time we installed the clutch items. Little wonder the speedo needle bounces...at least 2/3 of the teeth were completely gone. Most of the gear body was smooth..with a patch of teeth on one side. Sheesh?
The main issue is why that Steeda clutch cable with south so fast. I had the same one on my 93 vert and it was still going strong 4 years later?
Now to the speedo gear.
The car is a stock T-5, but the rear is 3.73 ratio. I understand that the WHITE gear is what I need for the car...right? I only had a RED one here, so I stuck that in for now. I think I Remember someone saying I will be off around 8 mph with the red gear?
How does tire size impact this? The rear tires are 15" rims but the tires are TALLER than stock... 255/60 R15.
Do I just have to suck it up and plan to replace a white gear every 500 miles or so? Other than that, I guess I'm doing ok. At least my airbag light is off!
Thanks for any comments and help.
