Rough first night at the track..

Well i took my stang down to the track tonight, my first time ever, and needless to say I did pretty bad. On top of there not being much traction out there, i missed 3rd on the first pass. First I ran a 17.2, I was really pissed . Then I went back, and the second time I ran a 15.381@94.63 mph. Better, but still pretty terrible. The 60' on the 2nd pass was a 2.405, so I think i can get a low 14 or high 13 out of my car if I get the launch right. i was amazed when i couldnt hook my 315s. Anyway pics coming soon it was a fun night

Where are you racing at? 315's might be a little much with your mod's. I get 2.0's on street tires at 20PSI.

Watch your RR "rolling resistance" on tires, sometimes these big tires will rob you of prower, your mods have to match your tires.

Raceway park and I think i'm going to put my 245 KDW's back on for next Friday and see what happens

Have the 1/8 and the mph for it? It's best to see the full slip to be able to analyze it and break it down somewhat.

The 2.4 isn't a good launch, though I don't see a 2.2 60' putting you into the 13s if you are cutting a 15.3

sorry my scanner isn't working right, my 1/8 was 10.097@71.95 mph and my reaction time was .911, but I don't think that counts toward your 1/4 mile time

yea i went last night too and it was rough to say the least, only ran 2x and both times i missed 3rd ahhh lol, got a 15.0 and 15.3 both with bad 60ft times lol......i guess its not too bad for my 1st time ever

We all have our first time stories, even though I only went once, I got in 7 runs and did all the things wrong i.e. missed shift, left windows open, too much air in tires etc.... Started with a low 15 time and left the track with a 14.3 in the 1/4.

The tire/rims are a good place to start. I used terminator rims and tires all around when I went and decided to try DRs for the next time on the rear any my stock rims/tires on the front. Got them mounted on and took wheel/tire weights when I did the change over - see below. Supposedly, for every 25lb rolling weight you slow down by a tenth, so I would imagine the swap to lighter rims would really help you out.

Stock 17x8" (5 spoke) rims with street goodyear eagles 245/45/17s 42.5 lbs
Stock 17x8" rims with Nitto DRs in 275/40/17s 47.5 lbs
Chrome 03 Cobra rims in 17x9" size with street Goodyear F1s in 275/40/17s 53.5 lbs

You did fine for the first time. Now that you got that behind you, use what you learned and sure you will improve with more practice.

I dont have my car anymore, but when I had my 02 GT, the very 1st time i took her to the track I ran a 14.0 @ 100mph with a 2.160ft. My mods were pretty much the same as yours, but with JBA shorty headers and a larger T/B and plenum.

Track is a lot of fun Glad you enjoyed it. keep at it!

If your 315's arent drag radials they are hurting you. Im assuming they are 315/35/17?

They dont have much sidewall at all and arent gonna grip much no matter what... I had a very hard time getting my Sumitumos in that size to hook. First run my 60' was 2.5, blowing 1st and 2nd gear to smoke.

The best 60' I got on streets was 2.16, and the 1/4 14.2 @ 100... I knocked it down from a 2.53 so it was a big improvment on just being careful on the launch.

My car doesnt 60' well period, suspension is too stiff. Best was 1.9 on DR's.

If you can get your 60ft times down around 2.1x you should be looking at a run of around 14.5 to 14.7. What altitude is the track that you are racing at? That will also make a big difference, the closer to sea level you get the better you will run. With some practice and a few times at the track I improved over 1 second in the quarter mile with my stang. I have drag raced for years but I always used my 80 trans am with SBC 327 and Turbo 350 trans with a shift kit and I want to say a 3000 stall ( been awhile since I raced the car so I could be wrong). These 5-speeds are a totally different ball game but like I said a few more times at the track and you will see big improvements. Good luck and welcome to drag racing, it's a blast.

With the mods in my sig, I ran 13.71 @ 101 with Fuzion ZRI 245/45/17's. Just try leaving the line at like 1500 rpm and ease into the throttle. I got a 2.01 60 doing exactly that.

I will be out all day tomorrow racing, hoping to get about a 12.6 at 115MPH. I will be racing at an altitude of 3400 feet, great break from the 5800 at Bandimere in Morrison Colorado.

Bandimere is a awesome track even with it being damn near in the clouds. I loved racing there just because it really is a first class facility. Track hooks awesome too. Man I miss being stationed at FT Carson

Drag racing tips 101.
Street tires - go around the water box if possible, if you can't, make sure you put No Water on your window and they will pull you entirely through the water box instead of stopping you in it. Then do a burnout to get the water off your tires as much as possible. This is where I am guessing you are going wrong, DO NOT rev the RPM's up and dump the clutch with street tires, you will just spin and get 2.4+60ft's. Slip the clutch out of the hole and then get on the gas. As long as there isn't too much water still on your tires you should be fine. Secondly, DON't WORRY ABOUT IT! You're there to have fun. Once you get some more seat time under your belt you'll get to know what works for your car. A hint to help you get a better reaction time, go on the last yellow. If you wait for green you are toast. By the time the power transfers from your foot to the motor to the tires to actually move the car forward you are good, remember, go when you see the last yellow. Try not to compare times too much on here. We are from all over North America, all the track elevations are different. You may never see a 13 second timeslip without a lot of mods depending on where you are. I'm usually racing at 5400+ elevations so I laugh when people say that my car seems slow when it runs 12.2's. Come up to the Mountains here and see what happens is what I tell them. Elevation, temperature, track prep all make a huge difference. From my experience on Friday night street car nights most tracks will never prep the track as they do for a Satruday or Sunday points day. Traction will usually always be an issue. Go out and have fun.
