Just to see what would happen, I unhooked the plug on the IAC and the car wouldn't run, which I figured would happen. If the IAC is bad, can it still be good enough to run the car but malfunction when the A/C is on?

The reason that you should not run your car off of the alternator is that you can get voltage spikes that can fry electronics. The battery also acts as a surge surpressor.

Well, I have my car in today and I just got a call from Ford and guess what they said the problem was? I have a cracked fan blade (how the heck that happened I'll never know) and it will cost me around $600 parts and labor. That is crazy just to replace a fan. crapola According to them, the fan blade wobbles because of the crack. I asked how that would make the whole car vibrate and shake and he just said that it can. I guess when you turn on the A/C, the fan automatically comes on. I guess I didn't know that. I thought it only came on when the engine gets too hot. Am I wrong about that? Can one of you turn on your A/C and see if the fan comes on when the engine isn't that hot and let me know if it really does come on? If not, I'll find out myself later when I get the car back. He said that if it would have been the IAC, it would have turned on the CEL and he said there were no codes at all from the car.

I felt that the car was losing power too in addition to the vibration so we'll see if the fan was the only thing at fault...

I just got the car back and it runs like new. So if any of you ever have this same exact problem, look at the fan.

I'm really surprised NO ONE picked up on the fact that you said the car vibrated at the light when your fans come on regardless of A/C operation... hello... guys, it's a gimme.

The fans come on automatically to help the condensor do its job but as soon as you said it didn't matter if the AC was on and you clearly stated your problem that as the fans come on the car shakes like heck, well, obviously its the fans.

You could have either unpluged the AC via fuse, and turned on the AC to trigger the fans and watched the one fan wobble dobble all over and saved yourself some coin.

600 bucks, man I need to up my fee for side jobs. Slipping fans and the shroud in is an easy task.

Even I failed to realize that it was the fan. I thought it was either a valve (IAC, PCV, etc) or something electrical. The vibration shook the whole car and I never thought a fan could do that. I thought it was the engine itself running badly.

$635.96 was how much it cost to be exact.

Fan and Motor Assembly: $299.13
Tension Pully (something else they found needed replaced): $28.05
Labor: $267.16
Material disposal: $18.72
Sales Tax: $22.90

I wish I knew if anyone else would have charged as much. $635.96 just seems a little extreme to replace a fan and a tension pully.

agreed, although dealerships usually charge more because then can. they get raped on warranty work, so they make up for in in regular service.

the key is to have a friend who is a mechanic, or find a reputable shop in your area.

one of my good friends is a certified master tech, and if i need my car worked on and he has time he fixes it in his driveway if he can, otherwise i take it to the shop he works at because i trust most of the techs there.

randy had quoted $140 for the tensioner, with belt.
something about the early modulars having aluminum ones that will bend...
is yours mostly black or aluminum?

The new one is black and I'm sure the old one was also.
