Hi gang new member here. I've got an 88 Sedan with GT40P heads mild porting and 2.02 valves. Rebuilt engine two years ago installed F303 shaft, 1.7 rockers and all was well. Just recently put these heads on and went with Holland Sharpe adjustable 1.6 with guides. Now it sounds like several lifters ticking and loud. Have adjusted the valves every way possible including the messy way with engine running but can't get rid of lifter tick. These are brand new stock lifters. Didn’t have this problem with original heads. In the market now for set of Kaase heads but need to find the cause of this tick. Are the aftermarket lifters better than the stockers? Once again this is a set of new lifters.

Are they getting oil? Are the rocker studs the correct length? Are you able to set the preload on the lifters? Hows the oil pressure? Do the rockers require different length pushrods? The guideplates may have raised the arms up high enough to not allow you to set the preload correctly. I'm leaning toward you needing longer pushrods...

Just a few thoughts that come to mind....

Thanks Jim, I kinda thought about push rod length but was not sure how or what to look for when checking. The preload and oil pressure are good and I'm getting plenty of oil out of each push rod. So I feel all these areas are OK. Now on the push rod length should the valve be open or closed or half way when I look for the roller to be in center of the valve tip?

You should be able to measure the thickness of the guideplate and that is the magic number to add to the stock pushrod length. You want the lifter to be on the basecircle (or valve fully closed) when checking the length. A good parts guy can get you the stock length for you so that you can add the guideplate thickness to it to order/buy of the shelf the pushrods that you need.

Let me know how it turns out...deffinately ask others also...before you fire it up, check all clearences first.

I have nothing productive to add to this thread, but pleeease never call a Mustang a sedan again. A sedan is a 4-door family car.

Just for the record Scott the "trunk" model is a 2 door "Sedan". The body designations were as follows. LX Hatchback, LX Sedan, LX Convertible, GT and GT Convertible. Some of our less educated Pony enthusiast chose to call it a "Trunk Car". Implying that the other models have no trunk. A hatch is a form of a trunk. Thank you for your input. Please accept my constructive criticism.

i had a problem with one of my valves being bent and sounded like a lifter but ended up being a bent valve...my .02

Roy ......... I'm with Scott on this one.
Let Ford call it a "sedaaaaaa .." .... I can't say the rest.

Most we jackass call 'em Notchbacks or Coupes ... usually notch, vert or hatch is what's been said too much 'round hare.

On topic tboui: Don't want the rockers too tight, but you probably know that.

I had the same noise, had bent valves, had it fixed, and still ticking. It sounds like the valvetrain is "sloppy". I've tried to rule out the lifters by trying to push down on them and see if they have any give in them. but they don't. The clatter is driving me crazy. any other suggestions?
