The new Flat Rock Assembly plant builds the mazda 6 and the mustang on the same line. I'm not sure on all particulars but I remember reading they are limited to something like 250,000 units from the facility(don't know if this is still true) and thats a reason why the 05's were so hard to find and had alot of markup. Also that number is split with the mazda 6 so not that many mustangs roll off the line these days compared to the past.

Wow! Bashing the RX8 I see.

Maybe it's not such a good choice.

Anyway! I'll just have to test drive one and see what they're all about. In any event, the 155 lbs. of torque doesn't bother me. I just want a small little car that handles good and has a little bit of pep to it. I could always bolt on a few parts and call it a day, but that's NOT my intention with the vehicle.

Plus, my fiance likes them, and I've got her now looking at Mazdas instead of the Pontiac Grand Prix GTPs that she so desperately wanted originally. I hesitate to buy a vehicle that has MANY brothers and sisters in the junkyard with blown engines (GTP). Also, I'm trying to shy away from GM.

My first initial reason for looking at a Mazda was the partnership it has with Ford. And yes, I'm trying to stick with the brand of car I've trusted my whole life. And after hearing Mazda and Ford share some parts, I've given some thought to purchasing a Mazda. I don't necessarily WANT a fast car, I'm looking for one that will HANDLE.

I thought an RX8 would be a good choice, apparently not in most opinions. In any event, I will decide for myself how I feel about the RX8 after driving it personally. However, my fiance's decision will DEFINITELY play a part in the decision I make on it. If she likes it, there's a chance I will like it.

Besides, my fiance won't let me get another Mustang, even if it IS an '03-'04 Cobra, which happens to be my favorite model.

I'd get a Mazda Speed 6

I wish I could afford such a nice DD! As for brand loyalty... that's a thing of the past for me. If I get sick of Mustangs, I'm going with a sweet Subaru.

Ford should have something to compete with the Cobalt SS and SRT4 overhere.

Well, we used to have the Contour SVT (which I owned the '98 version and LOVED it to death GREAT car) and also the Taurus SHO. Thoses were pretty cool cars as well.

But yes, as far as AWD goes, Ford SHOULD have something to compete with the Subaru among all the other AWD vehicles. I think I would probably rock a Ford Focus SVT all-wheel drive.

Any takers on that one?

local guy here with a MS3... damn thing is in the high 13's....

I'd take a AWD Focus but it would have to have a turbo at least. Wasn't there an AWD V6 Tempo at one point?

A guy at the track has a turbo auto Focus. He runs 8.80"s in the 1/8th.

You know...I'm extremely glad I posted this thread and discussed the RX8 before getting further serious about purchasing one. I'm not sure who it was who brought up the fact that a winter car shouldn't be RWD, b/c that's obviously a pointless purchase for what I need the car for.

I JUST realized that there's a Focus SVT that sits right across from my apartment that's been on sale for over a year now, so I'm SURE I could get a could price on it.

I mean think about it......it's FWD, it's a 4-cylinder, AND it'll have a little bit of power in the high rpms like the RX8 would. BEST part about it.......

It's a FORD!

Not to mention, this car has a paint job and looks really really nice IMO.

It's blue with double white racing stripes. It has tinted windows with aftermarket gun metal rims on it. AND it has red SVT lettering on the ground effects on BOTH sides. Looks REALLY nice!

THAT is the kind of car I will now be looking to purchase. And since nobody buys cars at a very fast rate these days, I'm POSITIVE I can talk the dealer into getting rid of it at a good price. It's a VERY small dealership too. Definitely shouldn't be hard to talk him down.

Thanks for the input fellas.

Make sure it's a real SVT (6 speed trany) before paying more for a Focus... I know one guy who had one (not stock) that could outrun stock Mustangs.

Huh? My Contour SVT was a 5-speed, and every Focus SVT I've seen was also a 5-speed so why would I expect it to be a 6er?

Because the real SVT Focus came with a 6 speed Getrag gearbox. IF you found a 5 speed SVT Focus, it's a fake... I don't think any SVT focus came with the MTX75 5 speed.

So then was my Contour a "fake" SVT than too?

I guess that ALSO means that every SVT Focus I've ever seen so far is a fake too. Fantastic.

The rx8 is a nice car. I wouldn't count the back seats for much except kids and a bag or groceries though. It is pretty tight. Insurance for that thing is pretty expensive which the wrx and evo are too. I absoultely love rotery motors and some day will probably buy a 3rd gen rx7. The apex seals use to go bad partially because of the turbo and partially because of the emissions. The cats that were required for the states wern't able to handle all the heat that the rotery produces and would clog. For every 1 rotation of the motor there are 3 power strokes... Wankles run hot, gets poor gas mileage, have no torque but really thrive off a turbo. For a DD I would look into something else. The car along with almost all mazdas handle like its on rails and are fun cars but again for a DD there are better options out there. Personally I would take a Z over a rx8 but thats just my opinion. To me a DD car should be reliable, safe and get good gas mileage, and something that can get dinged and you won't cry over it. RX8= is kind of flashy and may get you into trouble(tickets, spirited driving), Reliability is so far so good but not quite proven yet( HAS NO SPARE TIRE IN THE BACK, big nono for a DD), doesn't get good gas mileage, The car for the most part looks sharp but I woudnt want to drive it to the mall to go shopping.

The SVT contour had a 5 speed. The SVT focus had a 6 speed. The Contour's diff was made of glass so be careful buying those. The cam's at high rpm and a really hard left hand turn can be starved of oil and ruin the heads... very expensive. A lot of people have been using the escape short block on those to get some more power. The SVT Focus also had an LSD which the SVT contour didn't.
