Final eliminations in E-Town will be run under a cloud of sorrow today
Sunday dawned cloudy at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, an appropriate state for today's final eliminations for the 39th annual Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals will be run in a gloom following Saturday's tragic loss of Funny Car veteran Scott Kalitta. Kalitta qualified for the field on his final pass, and Robert Hight (pictured) will be the reluctant driver who makes a singe run in the first round in the lane opposite where Kalitta would have been.
In the wake of the tragedy, Kalitta's Top Fuel teammates – cousin Doug Kalitta, Dave Grubnic, and Hillary Will – also will not contest their opening-round matches, although with weather forecasts for the day calling for scattered thunderstorms, the wetness at Raceway Park may no longer be only from the eyes of his fellow former competitors and many fans.
