Going to do some work on the rear end and started thinking about throwing on the Saleen differential cover at the same time.

Are there any functional benefits to this cover or is it strictly a "looks good and says Saleen" piece?

There really isn't any performance characteristics to the cover whatsoever. It may help with heat transfer better, and like FASN said, there might be additional support for the bearings. however I wouldn't waste your money. It does add a very nice look to the rear end, however the car sits so low only you will ever see it...Tough call.

Yes, you have to get down pretty low to see it. Aside from supporting the bearings and providing, it also provides extra gear oil capacity and a drain plug.

If you did not know already, the cover is made be T/A and is the same design as T/As, FRPP and others. On ‘99+ Mustangs, some people experience minor contact between the diff cover and underside of the floor pan and may require a little clearance work. I think T/A has a newer model that provides better clearance but I don’t think Saleen has made the change to the new design.

Hey,

Are those cracks I see in your torque boxes???

:D I'm only joking ! I never knew the bottom of your car was a clean as the top. Looks like there will be some heavy competition at HB. I don't know if I can hang with you guys. :(

You had me going for a moment, Marcus. I only read the first sentence then started scrutinizing the photo. Good one. :rlaugh:

Don’t worry too much about the under carriage. The Saleen class at the show will be street level, not Concours level (clean enough to eat caviar off the power steering rack). You know most, if not all the cars that are going to participate. Consider also that based on the entries received thus far, there will likely be a ’84 to ’98 subclass and 99+ subclass.

Last year, when the judging team came over to our group, they said they weren’t going to look underneath. I can’t promise the same thing this year but considering the other cars in the group, I wouldn’t be too concerned. Make sure to detail anything you can see when squatting in front of the wheel. And clean out your glove box too. :D

Thanks for the info Dennis. I'll have to talk to Robert about what to bring. :D

The TA style covers do add strength, more oil capicaty, as mentioned and can cause clearance issues with the floor pan. As well, the fuel vapor return lines from the fuel tank can be cut or pinched when the Mustangs are lowered and are at or near full suspension compression. I had the cover on my Mach1 and it hit the front sheet metal of the spare tire well area after I lowered it. It also hit the vapor line but I repositioned it to the left to clear that. On my Son's GT it didn't hit the sheet metal but the vapor line still needed repositioned to prevent the pinching or cutting.

Also inside the cover there are ribs cast into the it to direct splashed oil to the carrier bearings to aid in keeping them properly lubed. :nice:
