Got some self etching primer today, 1 can..... is this good stuff. It came from a ppg shop.

also after I sand all the paint off do I do anything else before priming?

You should clean the metal with a degreaser and then alcohol (methylated spirits) to clean the degreaser off. In my experience (limited) sanding the metal usually degreases it and I just use metho to wipe it down, get the dust and possibly oil (from my skin) off.
