Ok if you have been following the story from my other thread - http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=475940 you know what im talking about. I took it into a mechanic today and he told me that first of all, changing out the O2 sensors and MAF was making it sending random codes even though I cleared them after each installation. Then he told me he couldn't figure out what was wrong with it because it was throwing codes intermitingly or something. He supposedly cleared them and wants me to drive another week and then take it back in once it has raked up some more codes (which will probably be the same ones). Why did I get some freakesh problem? I only put 4k miles on my car a year and baby it all the time and yet I seem to get constant problems. Sorry, just needed to vent. I guess lucikly, the mechanic is charging me anything for his testing until he can find something to fix. Anyone else out there had any similar problems to what I am facing?

Ok, got it back from the mechnaic for the second time. Here was his solution:

1. Bad 02 sensors - can't be just replaced them 3 weeks ago as the first idea to solve this problem

2. Bad wiring to the sensors - is it possible that both sensors wiring could go bad at the same time?

3. Bad computer - maybe?

Please, if there is someone out there with some idea after reading my other post please let me know. Does this sound like a computer problem? I don't want to spend another $150 on another dead end. Please will somone help me out here. Would taking it into the Ford dealership make any difference as they might know the problems better?

Thank you in advance, I hope someone out there reads this and helps me out.

Dude I can't help ya on diagnosis, but I can sympathize. Maybe it's something in the JO air. I have a laundry list of problems/possible fixes on mine. Makes me wanna cry

Hmmm, sounds like a parts replacer not a mechanic... If there was truly a concern about wiring or the ECU the mechanic should be getting out the break out box and testing the system.... I would be more inclined to think that you have an issue with fuel pressure or a vacuum leak.. This is just an off the top thought but if I were working on it that is where I would start.. These things may have already been covered in your previous post, I did not read it all..

The fuel pressure tested fine. The only thing that didn't test fine was the MAF connector, not sure what the contacts were but it read around 5V what it should be reading .6V at idle. Which is the reason the CE light goes off at around 70 mph (when connector should be showing 5V). MAF isint the problem, because I replaced it twice to be sure. I'm not sure exactly how the MAF works but I think the computer or something sends a signal of what the airflow should be at the current mph to the MAF and it checks to see if thats it. Because it is never getting the airflow it is expecting (because I'm not driving 70) it reads it as a lean condition because its putting the amount of fuel in it needs for 70 mph and not for the other speeds, which is also why it dies at stop lights because of lack of fuel.

Is that logic right? Does the car pump less fuel at higher speeds because there is more airflow? I really have no idea, but thats my guess. I know there is some genious on here that knows the answers to my problems.

sounds like a vaccuum leak to me. it could be something simple like a tube is old and came loose or cracked ...

with it idling, spray carb cleaner at different seals. if the idle changes, there's your leak.

As shown here your voltage will increase as air volume increases through the MAF.. If I am reading your post correctly your getting full 5.0 reference voltage at idle, this does not make the most sense because that would cause a rich run condition.. The only thing I can think there is that you were testing the wrong lead and actually picking up the Vref line...

Another point would be that with more air flow you will have more fuel flowing through the injectors.. The pressure will stay in a certain range but the duty cycle of the injectors will widen and allow the injectors to stay open longer and flow more fuel..

While you are pondering this, I am going to do a little research...

Well I feel like the biggest moron. I decided that I should go back to the start and apply the KISS method (Keep It Simple Stupid). I looked at a wiring diagram and realized that both O2 sensors feed into a common fuse. Seeing that both went bad at the same time, makes since that this could be bad. Sure enough it was. So basically I have 2 extra MAF, 2 extra O2 sensors, a code reader, and a fuel pressure tester now that I could have done without. Well that was a expensive lesson in stupidty. What I don't understand is why I didn't think of that in the first place, or why no one suggested it, or why the mechanic didn't check that as well. Well now I feel like a moron, but at least I didn't go buy a computer.

Now its time to fix my electronic locks and keyless entry, and you can bet ill look at all the fuses first.

Thanks for all the help, to bad it turned out to be such a humbling experience for me.

Yeah, if you are reading 5volts on the MAF terminals that should read .6V they you probably have an ECU/wiring problem.

Sounds like you have a big mess on your hands.

Well that problem fixed, another decides to show up. I get out to my job site which is 250 miles out and get to my hotel and get my room and all that stuff. Get back out to my car to go around to my room and its dead. So I had to get a jump and went to Sears to buy a new battery. Fixed that problem, just wondering whats next. Seems like my car is turning into the FORD saying (Fix or Repair Daily).

Welcome to the club!

Just be glad that most problems with our cars are by far much cheaper to deal with than most other cars. The way I look at it........everytime something breaks or goes wrong I have yet another opportunity to buy better performance parts.......kind of like doing my part to sustain the aftermarket economy!

Dude, your car is 10 years old! I bet you can't count how many times that thing has been started, stopped, etc. etc. Get used to fixing problems because the older they get, the more things wear out.

If you wanna unload those o2 sensors, I'm thinking I'll need some, and I'd love to pay less.

Let me know,

Jason
