She's not starting! HELP! (could be timing issue?)

She cranks over wonderfully but she aint starting! I have no clue where to start looking for the problem. The only thing I can think of is that the timing could be off. I took the distributor off completely this winter to paint the engine but I found a mark of where it was before I took it off. So I just put it back in there and thought maybe it would be in time, but I guess not. How do I time it, I have a timing light but I cant seem to find the timing marks on the engine anywhere (maybe I painted over them...)

I also put in new Autolite 45's and Moroso 8mm plug wires. Could they be it? The battery is brand new, the wires are all hooked up right.

I dont really know how to prime the carb though. The piece of advice I got was to take the air compressor and blow air into the tank while sealing off the filler neck. This puts pressure in the tank and causes the fuel to go through the lines. It seemed to work because I can see fuel in the fuel filters and it squirts fuel in the carb (Holley 600 VS).

Any other suggestions as to what to check would be great! Thanks!
 
since you have fuel squirting you don't need to prime it any longer, but if you took the distrib out and just stuck back in- it most likely is your timing.

-take the distrib back out.
-take out the number one plug (facing engine, front left)
-turn the engine till the number one piston is on the compression stroke(blow air our out of the spark plug hole) and all the way up in the cylinder.(i used to use a coat hanger to stick in the cylinder to find out when it was topped off when turning the crank by hand)
-put the distibuter while pointing the rotor towards where the number 1 would be on the cap and drop it in.

you could have to do this a few times to get it on the right tooth of the cam. also be carefull not to pull the oil pump shaft out.

Oh I forgot to put in there that there was smoke coming from somewhere in the trans tunnel I have no idea where from and I can't really describe what it smelled like. I stopped trying to start it after i saw the smoke.
 
Oil pump shaft sits directly below the distributor. It "plugs into" the bottom of the distributor shaft. I had one heck of a time getting mine to seat properly. I found cussing doesn't help.
 
i just learned how to do this last night accually. i turned the crank by hand(pressing down tight on the belt and moving it but rotating the fan by hand) till the little marker peice of metal on the engine is on 8..
after that i put the distributer back in so that the rotor was pointing at the front drivers side carb bolt and then by looking at the cap turn the distributer so that the rotor will be on the no.1 spark plug wire.. pop the cap on and try to start it.. when i did this it threw gass up out of the carb.. so i pulled the distributer a little out until the the rotoer stoped turning then turned the rotor 180 degrees and pop it back in.. it should be facing the exact oposite way it was before you pulled it.. if not pull it and try to turn it a little more to catch a diff set of teeth. make sure the you check which what it is pointing before pulling it up. after that it worked.. i advanced the timming a little more and it runs fine.. i didnt use a timming light so i dont know what the degrees are but it runs fine. if it does run rough and tryes to stall while your stopped advance the timming a little more and turn down the idle(cause mine went up more as i advanced the dist.)

this worked great for me but i dont know what kinda cam i have or what kinda you have so the timming might be different.
