Shift Kit

If someone could tell me everything about a shift kit. What it does? How it helps an AODE? How much? Best brands out there? I have been searching on these forums and I found out it is a necessary/wise investment for an Automatic tranny but not sure on what else it is about. Thanks for any help.

Transgo is the most recognized brand for shift kits. I bought one an I'm looking at getting it installed. It makes your car shift firmer that the stock settings. it's a very needed upgrade on all aodes.

I was thinking about doing the trans go but decided to do the Jerry mods instead. all the info you need about the aode and the best mods you can do are at this site

I have a ahrdcore kit and LOVE it. Its such a difference, it'd be a sin not to have one. The shifts are quick, and snap your head back. They make your car feel faster than it is. Also, I can peel a long time in second.

So would it be necessary to install the shift kit and a higher stall converter at the same time, or it does not matter?

you don't need get a stall with a shift kit. it'll work fine on its own. but of course, there's nothing like reving up to 3000rpm then letting go with hardly screeching your tires.

Is a shift kit fairly easy to install for a novice mechanic. I read that it gives you instructions and an instructional video, but like I said I am very new to the mustang scene and mechanicly speaking?

Sorry off topic hey Law where in AZ are you from? Well, not to get too much off topic. I think I have a B&M shift kit. I don't know it came with the car. Sometimes I get good shifts sometimes they suck. But the tanny is the next mod I am doing so I won't have to worry about that anymore.

My friends and I installed a TransGo shift kit in my mustang. We used the school auto shop so we had the help of a lift and some other tools. The snap rings are a pain to take out, that was the longest part of the entire installation. I don't have that much mechanical experience but I use common sense, and I thought I was always thinking that we were going to break something. We had a TV in the garage and we were going along with the manual and the video which made it a lot easier. Overall the entire installation took 3 days, working 1.5 hours a day. I cleaned everything so it was spotless with brake cleaner, that took a good portion of the time too.

If you have all of the tools then do it yourself. It's not hard at all and you will learn how some of the transmission stuff works. If you're looking at having a mechanic install it then figure about 3 hours of labor, the cost of new transmission fluid (I used Valvoline Mercon V which was $4 a bottle, I think it was $40 total), and a new filter (if you need one).

When I first drove the car with the shift kit, I had almost no mods done to the car. I didn't feel neck snapping shifts but the shifts were definately quicker. After the 4.10 gears were installed there was a huge difference. The shifts are really hard at full throttle. On some days I can chirp the tires on the 2-3 shift.

Superdust22, no I have not been out there yet to firebird. I have had a few problems with my stang that I need to fix before I take it out there, but very anxious to do it though. Although I would like to go out there just to check it out and socialize.

law, an average price to install a shift kit from what i've been hearing is around $200 (+the price of the kit). someone correct me if i'm wrong (and about to get ripped off)
