Hey guys, I was looking into getting a shift kit for my 04 GT this winter. Any suggestions?

In my opinion, the 4R70W's in the 99-04 Mustang GT's are the best transmissions ever. I would not mess with a shift kit, because it is rare you will find a shop that can properly install one. I would find a good tuner friendly shop that can tune the cars shift points and rev limiter. That is really all you need in this day and age.

I would do the J mod, if you do a search you will find it - it is an easy modification that one of the engineers that designed the trans reccommends....yes, Ive read these transmissions are better than the ones ford is putting in the 05 -06's

The only problem with these transmissions is the fact that it builds up a lot of heat, necessitating the use of a tranny cooler if you are runnig it hard for extended periods of timne.

Which reinforces the statement I make to all auto owners; your first mod should be a nice big tranny cooler.

Shift kit wise, do it yourself, don't pay somebody. If you can follow directions, and have a clean work area, you can do them yourself.

Transmission cooler, J-mod shift kit, and a tune. That is all that you need. If you want to do more, you can do gears and a torque converter.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but if you read my sig.
you will see what I have as far as trans and motor stuff. My question is which brand of tranny cooler do I need to buy thats the BEST!!! With the mods I have???

I need one bad.

The best transmission coolers out there are the ones that have an electronic fan on them for enhanced cooling abilities. B&M pretty much makes the best as far as I know of.

One cooler is as good as another. Make sure it's a high capacity cooler and located someplace where it's going to get a lot of air. The additional fans are nice, but unless you're running a really agressive torque converter, you're probably never going to make enough heat to warrant them.

My only problem with a cooler is that I have a front mount heat exchangerw/electric fans in the front. Where should I mount the cooler??? should I put it in front of the rad. and will it get enough air flow. My only thought is that the heat exchanger has electric fans that suck air I think, so if I mount the cooler behind these fans it should excactly blow air on the cooler right?? sorry if I'm asking stupid questions. I just need someones advise or other ideas.

Have you any room to mount it above the heat exchanger (that's where I've got mine)? Getting it in the direct path of incoming air flow is what you're trying to achieve, but mounting it anywhere that it's going to get even the slightest amount of airflow is better than not having one at all. If you go with an all Aluminum unit, it will greatly help dissipate heat even at idle.

Gearbanger thanks again for the great info. The only problem is that my exchanger takes up the whole front bumper inlet area on a GT style bumper, so wouldn't be able to mount above. I like the idea of a aluminum cooler, what brand and where can I find one to buy??

The tube and fin coolers are usually thinner and easier to get into tight places (IE, in front of or behind a radiator). The stacked plate coolers are constructed similar to a radiator and are built more for durability. One will cool as well as the other, just go with the largest one that will provide the most surface area and will fit, for your application. The more transmission fluid you can get out of the transmission and circulating into the lines and cooler at a time, the easier it will be to control and lower its temperature.
