Hello,
I am trying to remove and install new shocks on a '68. How do you remove and install the bar that goes through the top of the shock and connects with the shock cap? Or is there a way to get that bar through the shock cap without removing it?

That bar is part of the shock, actually. Take a look at your new ones and you'll see you only need to remove the 2 bolts on the top of the shock cap

No, if I remember correctly, you have to twist the shock in a certain direction. So you have to remove the cap to get that done. The bar and the collar on the shock made me take it off. Good thing it's only three nuts per side.
if you're just doing shocks, they have to come out thru the top anyway.

I am restoring the suspension on my '68. I removed the old shock and cut the crossbar to remove it from the shock tower cap. My new Edelbrock shocks came with two crossbars. The crossbar that is installed on the shock does not go through the shock tower cap, and the holes in the crossbar do not line up with the mounting holes in the shock tower cap. The other crossbar lines up with the holes in the shock tower cap perfectly. I need to remove the crossbar from the edelbrock shock and replace it with the other crossbar. How can this be done?

removes the cap. how are going to put the bar back thru, if you're having this much trouble to take it out. you don't. remove the caps!

Let's go back to his original question. He's not asking about how or if to take the cap off, he's asking how to somehow take the bar off the top of the shock... which you simply don't do. It's part of the shock!!!
I do agree that to fish the shock out, you must remove the cap, but that is not what he asked.
Does your new shock look like the one on the right, or do you have something I'm not familiar with?

The cap is off. It has been off for days. I cannot get the crossbar through the hole in the shock tower cap. Plus the crossbar will not line up with the holes for mounting the shock on the shock tower caps. I need to know how to replace that crossbar with the other one that came with my shocks.

Yes, they are edelbrock and they look like the shock on the right.

that's why you have to remove the caps. you must rotate the shock almost upside down. and twist and rotate. it's a trick. sometimes after trying for a while, you stop and let the parts relax, it falls thru the hole!
actually, hold the shock, and twist and rotate the cap. like I said before, it's the rod and the collar of the shock that makes it tuff. I have the Edelbrocks also, so they do work!

shock followup

The crossbar in an inverted shock can be installed by twisting around like the other guys said. In Edelbrocks Performer IAS shocks, the big end is at the top and the clearances are very tight. To remove the crossbar, all you have to do is put the shock in a vise. It pushes out easily. To install push the crossbar all the way to one end. Put the shock through the shock tower cap, and push the crossbar back to center.
