Shortblock choices...

Well I wanted to post this 5 hours ago but a severe storm knocked out the power.

I'm torn between 2 engine choicees, both around 3 grand. 1st on is a Livernois Forged shortblock with an iron block. 2nd is a D.S.S. Rebuild of my teskid alum block. I had a Rod Bearing falure and the crank won't turn now.

Both are around $3000 but if I chose the DSS it'll be more work cause I'd have to tear apart the internals and ship them the crank and bare block, if i do that the walls might be damaged from what happened with the rod bearing. Then there's a quick replacement but i'm changing the alum block with an Iron on. Anyone chime in, amybe have a better idea or so, Have delt with these companys or even one cheaper. It would be a huge help

you are spending about 3k, do yourself a favor & go over & check out MPH's shortblocks. they are a few hundred dollars more expensive but WELL worth it. those two companies you listed don't have nearly the amount of machining that their blocks do. they've told me how much they have in machining alone in those blocks & let's jsut say i'm very impressed. not to mention mph has taken blocks out made by those companies & made more power than both of them. good luck with it

I also guess what your final goal with the car is. From some of the reading I've done on your other post seems like you want a good corner craver/ all around car. In which case I would go with the rebuild of the AL block, also it does keep the original block in the car (never know prices may go up for a # matching car in the future). Now if your going balls out drag car well I had a Cobra owner tell me he switched to the iron block due to the boost he was running. Don't know but that was what he said and seems real knowledgable on his car.

i can understand iron block for regidity, however he is sporting the teskid block, and that is the strongest aluminum block ford has ever had machined. personaly i'd stay with it.

on that note, do you know if you have had any internal damage? meaning scratches in the walls, or any cracking based on the failure. if you cant do the tear down yourself then its going to cost, you and I both know that. my suggestion would be to look into VT engines for doing the buildup, or MPH as suggested above.

MPH has a great reputation when you are going large like a blower or a new block. VT engines is arguably the most knowledgable people on the market for the mod motors, so i would not leave them out either. one thing i would do is compare their prices, and also check into Sean Hyland Motorsport in their used section. a lot of times they have brand new, or short use takeout blocks that are already bored .020 over and ready for internals. they also have fully built short blocks that people decided they didnt want.

this is a great deal from them as they have great quality as well, just a usual higher price that makes them not as prefered. if the cobra is not your daily you might want to consider getting all the internal parts in a package from VT and get a bored block from SHM and built it up yourself. I'll be doing this route if i choose to go with a blower.

there are a lot of choices out there. DSS has also had a lot of complaints to go hand in hand with their praises... however i have not heard nearly as many in the last year and a half as i did when they first started to ramp up. MPH, SHM, and VT is where i would shop for either the full block or just internals and make it yourself. but it DOES pay to shop around and see which route will be cheaper. www.karkraft.com has the "mountain" block which is the teskid if you want new.

I looked at MPH before and all they had were 2V's. I'm leaning tward rebuilding with DSS I really don't want to lose the alum block considering they are rare and it came with car.

I'm not going to drag race the car or make it boosted, I just need replacing with forged internals. there will be no additions to it until i'm done with the suspension.

I would suggest VT also. in 20+ years of building cars, they are the best I ever dealt with. They where also the quickest. They did everything I wanted and then some. Price sounds in line to me, mine was a little more, but I got a lot of extras like pump, Canton pan and tray, ARP studs ect. Give them a call Scott or Jim are the guys to talk to

I have an aluminum block 2v from MPH. I highly recommend them. They can build you whatever you want/need.

if you are never going to boost it, or go high RPM (8k), then get a probe rotating assembly and get the mountain block from karkraft and be done with it. on a side note, i noticed on Ebay that there is a company that will take your shortblock and give you a rebuilt one for like 2300 i think... do a search for cobra motor....

I would look at VT. they ahve a sportsman cobra shortblock for $2900.

I tend to like the fact the VT guys and the MPH guys come right to the boards and help people out.
