94 original Cobra Mustang Motor

Has 116k miles and I'm trying to get him to throw in the cobra gauge cluster

Depends on your plans and what parts you would be using or selling... You can get an explorer engine with lower miles for cheaper... however you dont get the 94/95 cobra valve covers , manifolds, and cam... it looks like a decent deal... but like i said it all depends on your future plans... are GT40's going to suit your needs... what about the cam and manifold....

If your going to boost it it will be fine... But i would want new rings,seals,gaskets still... if that thing has stock head gaskets you will probably blow them anyway

Yea that would be a lot easier to do with the engine out of the car and I should make a little more power cause the cobra engine will flow better.

Probably a good deal for what you want to do. I imagine the big quesiton is How long has that engine been sitting? I would bring a breaker bar and socket with you when you go look at the enigne. Just make sure you can turn it over easily. At $850, you can take it apart and freshen it up, and it will still be a good investment.

Thanks you wouldn't know off hand what the size of that bolt is? I think a 1 inch maybe no that's too big

Well I picked it up so now what should I do with it? Drop it right in, throw new gaskets in it, Rebuild it?

Probably do a bigger oil pan but one that fits with stock k-member

Well, I guess the bear minimum is a new rear main seal and oil pain gasket. Those are a lot of work to change once the engine is in the car. I would pull the oil pan off first, and see if there is any nasty oil, corrosion, and damage to the cylinder walls. Check the timing chain too. If you have any extra cash, it wouldn't hurt to pull the heads off and get a look in the top too.

Kurt has a good point, money is really the issue here. How much do you have to spend? A complete rebuild is always an option, but that will cost money and time. I would add to Kurt's list a new oil pump. You can look at the cylinder walls while the heads are on and see if the crosshatching is in place, or if a piston is cracked or any broken rings.

Excellent point on the new oil pump. A new oil pump is only about $20.

Basically no money now lol. Definitely needs a new oil pan so I might save up for a bigger one. I was thinking about putting new head gaskets on it too. I guess I'll see what happens. This motor should just drop right in right?

The motor will just drop in. The motor mounts and all engine wiring harnesses are identical. However, your GT computer won't know about the bigger fuel injectors, heads and intake; it'll probably run poorly. You may want to look into getting a chip for your GT computer and loading the Cobra tune (J4J1) on it. If you're going for low cost, I recommend the Moates.net chips. They're cheaper than the Tweecer but you'll probably have a steeper learning curve for tuning later on. But loading the J4J1 on a chip is really easy.
