Side View Mirror Fell Off!!

So, I was driving down the road just cruising at like 30 when I hear a pop, clank, crunch.

I look over and see that my mirror is missing from the passengers side. The screw holding it in place must have come loose and the thing just fell out of the housing.

It would have been funny if it hadn't chipped my paint on the way down.

Ah, good thing I still have some paint mixed up.

Does anyone make just the replacement mirrors that going into the racing mirror housing on the 71-73 mustangs??

Mine needed to be replaced anyway because it flopped around in the housing. I guess there used to be some rubber bushings or something in there to help it stay in place. I do have an extra mirror for the housing because I had to buy a used one when the base of mine cracked, but it was/is missing the rubber bushings as well.

Ok so I just kinda rigged something together to stop my mirror from flopping around in the housing.

I need to get a picture, but let me see if I can describe it. A ball and socket attaches the mirror to its mounting base. On back of the mirror there are little shafts on either side of the ball socket. Those shafts fit into holes in the base where I'm assuming some type of rubber grommet went into the holes and friction between them and the mirror shaft/stud things kept the mirror in place.

My fix for my problem was to cut two 1.5 inch by .5 inch strips from some rubber heater hose I had laying around. I cut a hole just big enough for the mirror shaft to go threw towards one end of both pieces. Then I glued the rubber strips onto the back of the mirror. (I did one side and then the other because I needed to get the mirror shaft threw each piece)

Bam! Works like a charm.

well glad to hear you got it fixed. i know the local glass shops can cut you piece of mirror glass if you need it.

oh yeah, i'll hopefully be bringing the cougar home this weekend if everything works out right this time, we were going to do it last weekend but the scheduling didn't work out

I had the same thing happen to me going down the highway. I was doing about 75 when something big flew in my window, I looked over to see my mirror lying on the passenger seat. Luckily all I needed was a new screw.

I guess Ford listened to customers with fallen mirrors and in order to make stangs more driveable stopped installing passenger mirros on their classics
