Smog Pump Location

The pump does sit under the alternator. I took mine off years ago. The smog pump should be at the bottom of the engine and the alternator is at the top. If your alternator is on the bottom then I'd venture to say that you don't have the right pulleys/brackets. I believe that one of the grooves off the crankshaft pulley (should be 3 total) pulls the smog pump. Sorry I don't remember any more than that.

Thanks for reply Dmoody, I think I will re-check my counties
requirements since car is going on 29 years old. Might just forget
about it. My initial research indicated that equipment had to be
there but not necesarily functional. Nice to see your so close,
I am in Guilford County. I don't see many of these around. Mine has
been in garage last year getting a T-5. Saving money for a new paint job
for the spring.

I could count on one hand the number of II's I've seen since I've lived here.
Currently there is a black Cobra II on 158 (Reidsville Rd) for sale. It is black on black with a V-8. The seller wants 2750 which I think is too much considering the spray bomb paint job and overall condition of the car.

So Guilford County requires a smog pump? I was thinking any car in NC older than 25 yrs didn't have to pass emissions? ..maybe I'm wrong

Your 2 groove pulley should be ok. The alternator, waterpump, crank and smog pump would share the same belt. Yeah it's a long sucker. I have seen in other cases, where the smog pump used a smaller, narrower belt of it's own that ran just off the crank. Can't swear to what exact years that was. Generally all the fords were set up the same in that particular year, it's just the Mustang II has a unique pulley and bracket system that cam original. From what i've seen and delt with, nothing says you can't convert to a compete v-belt pulley setup off of another 302 that had a similar smog system.

Looks like that Alt bracket and the P/S bracket you have there are the Mustang II specific pieces. And I'm willing to bet you'll find a D*ZE part number on them and probably the lower pulley too.

To solve you non-powersteering problem, look for 68-69 for cars (possible 70-72 aswell) for the power steering to be on a belt of its own. That bracket setup will be exactly what you're looking for. I'm running a pulley and bracket set (single groove) off of a 68-70 era 302 out of a Ford Truck. (power-nothing!) Had to make a spacer to shim out the waterpump pulley (think it was 3/8" give or take) to correctly align the waterpump pulley to the rest.

Also, March and a couple other aftermarket pulley manufacturers do make a pulley set in either 1,2 or 3 groove depending on your needs that will work without P/S, but you'll have to cough up some brackets.
