THere are many components of the smog system.

If you are talking about the A.I.R. pump (aka smog pump), when the motor is cold, the pump vents air to the back of the heads to promote the cat light-off. Once warm, the air is diverted to the H-pipe for the cats.

I was reading another post it said that it helps during light off, and helps keep the cat cool once its at operating temp, if thats so then how does the diverter valve know when to switch to the cats instead of pumping air into the heads? Also, lets say that we delete the diverter valve and just pump air into the heads, this will still keep the cats at a constant temp once at operating temp then right? or does it keep switching from the back of the heads to the cats to keep a constant temp for the cats? all these questions are bc I have victor jr heads for my 347 stroker motor and I wanna keep all the stuff there cause the guys doin the inpection around here really dont know what they are looking except for the fact that the equipment is there. If I could keep the cats and the smog pump that would at least help me pass the visual and help me from getting tickets around here and it might even give me a chance at passing emissions I highly doubt it though but it doesnt hurt trying

I just thought of another question, I didnt even think about this one till now lets say I do use my victor jr heads there are no holes dilled for the egr that goes int the intake, will that cause a check engine light and cause any engine problems?cause there is no exhaust flow there the sensor is not moving do I have to hold it down some how so I dont get a check engine light or will the simple fact that its there still hooked up be ok enough?

I dont know about the code since I run full smog.

Were I choosing whether to run the air flow to the back of the heads or cats, I would DEFINATELY run it to the cats. That's where the majority of the benefit of the air comes from. A lack of air to the back of the heads would just make it take a little longer to light off the cats (relatively speaking, who cares).

thanks hissin thats what I was thinking I would do but now what about the egr...... anyone? I wonder how much longer the cats will take to light off and if it even makes a difference. do you know how the diverter valve works? I am just curious
