Smoking problem

Aright well heres my problem. Ive had my engine finished for a while now and its in the car. But i really havnt been driving the II alot because im also in the process of getting a new hood made (cowl). And around here its illegal to drive with out a hood. So the farthest Ive drivin it is just around my subdivision. I have around 50 miles on the new build so its definitly not broken in yet. So heres the problem it will drive fine and run real good when im just cruising but when i gun it a bit and let off the gas a big puff of smoke billows out from each side of the engine. Remember no hood so i can see where it comes from. Now it wont do it if im just give it gas slowly. I can be going 60mph and as long as i dont give it alot of throttle at once it wont smoke. What can this be. I cant get it to do this while im in the garage. Even if i rev it real high. So it only does it under load. Ive replaced the header gaskets and i even took off the valve cover breather on the driver side and put a pcv valve on there cause i thought there might be to much crankcase pressure building up. But that didnt fix it. If anything that caused me more of a headache cause i had to retune the carb and change the timing because the pcv valve messed up my engine vacuum and caused the motor to run like crap. So right now im stumped. The smoke isnt blue so i dont think its oil but if i had to give it a color id say brown. Oh yeah I also resealed my valve covers just to make sure they wernt leaking. And when i was doing that i made sure the heads where torgue correctly and they were. Does any one have any suggestions as to what this might be. Any help would be great.

Btw....What is a good oil pressure for a 302 with the stock oil pump say at 900 rpms

Wow...... That's a good one.... Could it be paint burning? (headers?) How do you have your PCV system hooked up? You should have one, and there's really no reason not to. Doesn't really hamper performance.

Oh! and good oil pressure should be min 10-20 lbs at idle. Any less and I'd start worrying. On the norm most rebuilt engines will be in the ballpark of 30 psi give or take. (all figures with engine warm)

Valve guides/seals?

Well I thought it might be paint to but wouldnt that smoke all the timne and not just when i punch the throttle. And i have probably ofver 50 miles on it so i would think that would be gone by now. I dont think its the valve guides or seals cause i have brand new AFr 165 heads. The pcv valve is on the driver side valve cover and there is a breather on the passanger side valve cover. I just used my old pcv valve from the original motor and hooked it up to some vacuum line and ran it to the back of the intake manifold and hook it up there. Any one else have any suggestions

Possible intake gasket leak? Hook up a pressure/vacuum gauge with a length of hose pressed into the grommet on the valve cover once you remove the pcv valve. Than remove the filter from the other valve cover and plug it with something the same size. A light bulb end should work. Start the motor and watch to see if you're getting vacuum or pressure. If it reads on the vacuum side you have an intake gasket leak or a warped intake. A good intake seal will gradually rise in pressure on the gauge.

Also check to be sure the intake bolts have been properly torqued.

Remove the pcv valve hose from the rear of the intake and connect it to the fitting on your carb. Connect your brake booster hose to the rear intake fitting if you have power brakes.

Just a guess, maybe it will help.

Hmm... if you have a mechanicl fan, this could be blowing this smoke source up and out where you can see it. Might try combing the front of the engine for mysterious leaks or burns or??? Check out your radiator too. Sometime if you used other then high temp paint on the radiator, it could lightly burn too from the engine's heat.

Exhaust.

If it were a fluid leak I think you could see it, and exhaust has been known to be brown. Though I think you could hear an exhaust leak that was that bad.

That's my guess.

Running the PVC to the back of the manifold could lean out one or more cyllinders.

You may want to get a PCV carb spacer.

Thanks for the replys.....Ill take a look at the ii today and check everything. Aas for the pcv valve ill be moving it. I wasnt aware that it could lean out some cylinders.
