Snapped An Axle!!!!!!

Well, something had to give last night when I went to the track. The Nittos bit like slicks and everything else held up. I guess one of my axles was the weakest link. On my first run I heated up the Nittos pretty good, I think I launched at about 2000-2500rpms and it bogged. So on the next run I heated them up again and launched at about 3000-3300rpms. The lights came down and on the 3rd yellow I dumped the clutch and SNAP!!!!!!! At first I thought it came out of gear or something so I took it out of gear and put it back in but it still didn't move. the track official that was standing there told me to stop trying cause the rearend was shot. So, now I just want to find another stock rearend cause I don't have the money to buy a 31 spline setup...even though thats what I really want.

go find yourself a V6 or Gt/Cobra and take the Axles out of it.... cheaper than buying a rear end..

Why??? So that one can just break again? If you're going to do it, do it right the first time, not the 4th or 5th time. Save the money and wait, unless of course this is your only mode of transportation.

Two questions though...How much hp are you pushing to the wheels? And how many passes has your car seen on Nitto's or sticky tires??

Reason I ask is because 3000-3500rpm dump on Nitto's really shouldn't of shocked the tires bad enough to break an axle...it's always a possibility, but I've seen lots of guy dump in repeatedly at 5000rpm on the stockers with good luck, albeit your working with a ticking timebomb.

Well, this IS my only form of transportation so I need to get back up and running ASAP. I ran the car on Nittos maybe 3 runs last year but the Nittos I had didn't bite as good as mine did last night. I just got these nittos about a month ago and this was my first time really heating them up. They didn't spin AT ALL when I lauched last night. They bit like if i had a set of slick on the car. Maybe the axle was on its way out and I didn't know, but I know now. Depending on if i can find a 31 spline setup at a reasonable price I might get it, but I'm not forseeing that.

Interesting. I'm surprised you snapped an axle with just DR's. I will have to be careful when I go back to the track in the spring, don't want to break anything...

Stangboy - I think i have a stock axle laying around if you want it.. Just pay shipping and its yours.

Im also suprised you snapped an axle on nittos. Have you pulled it yet to inspect it?

I agree with 94DreamGT on doing it right the first time.. I would step up to an auburn pro or eaton and 31 spline axles and be done with it. Hopefully you wont have to touch it again. But its alot of $$$

Well, I won't be able to open it up until this weekend when I can bring it to a friend of mine's shop. Right now they don't have the room for my car so i have to wait. But from what I could tell, it looks and sounds like the driver side axle. Because when I tried to get the wheel to unjam the right wheel was kind trying to wobble. If I'm lucky I just snapped the axle and didn't strip the splines in the differential. That means all i have to change is the axle. The only catch would be I need one with the ABS thing on it. So, when I take it apart this weekend I'll let yall know how bad it is. If I can get my dad to let me use his digital camera I'll take some pic. So yellow1995Cobra, I'll let you know if I need that axle sometime this weekend or early next week. I'll PM you. I'd be glad to pay just shipping for it. Good lookin' out, man! BTW, where are you located?

HairyCanary - I didn't expect those Nittos to hook like that. I heated them up pretty good because it was cold last night so I figured I'd have to get them hot to even get a little bit of traction. Street tires don't normally do to well on that track(Gulfport Dragway), but I hadn't run my car there in a long time. I let'em smoke for about 4 or 5 seconds and went to the line. No lie.....They bit like slicks....NO SPIN AT ALL!!! I felt the tires after I broke the axle and they were gummy. But when we were pushing my car off the line my tennis were sticking to the track, so maybe it was mostly the track.

Do you remember what ran before you? I've had my street tires grip like that once! I went right after one of the big boys and their wide @$$ slicks. He left me a VERY nice hookup. Sure fooled me AND the z28 I was racing. LOL

Yea i doubt it stripped the splines. It probably broke just before the splines like money pits did, i dunno if you saw the photos.

The ABS sensor doesn't come with the axle...it slides into a hole on the caliper/axle bracket....so that won't be an issue with Jesse's axle...Hopefully you can remove yours with out braking it....they suck to remove... Damn plastic...

Rio, he means the exciter ring. You can nget them from ford for around $15-20 or you can just get yours pressed off. If money doesn't allow for an upgrade to 31 spline, at least get a nice set of aftermarket 28 spline ones like superiors. I got mine from summit, they come with the studs AND new bearings for around $250. Assuming the posi is OK, you can just slip in the new axles and be done with it. There is NO reason why your axles snapped unless the forging was flawed from the factory. I have only seen one other guy break an axle on nittos, and it was in a new car. I think ford covered it under warrenty due to faulty forging.

Well, after talking to a few more people, I'm finding out that the spider gear may have broken. So, I'll find out for sure exactly whats broken when I take it apart. Hopefully I'll be able take it aprt this weekend. I'll let yall know the details when I do.

I drool everytime I see Strange's bolt in 9 inch rear. For $1985 they sell the entire rearend unit with the huge 31 spline axles. Several other companies sell the same thing too I believe. A 31 spline/diff 8.8 inch setup will cost at least $700 just for the parts and it will not handle near the power of the 9 inch.
