I work at a surveying company and every so often they get rid of old company vehicles by raffling or selling them to employees.

Up until now they always did raffles, but this time they did a silent auction. I put bids on several vehicles, figuring I wasn't going to win, then they sent out the announcements and I won this:

It's a 2009 Ranger Supercab XL, 4x4, 4.0 auto, with 172K on it and the tranny is pretty roached. But I got it for the princely sum of $801. Low trade on this truck according to KBB is $5000 so I'm pretty happy with that price!

Once I get the transmission fixed I think I'm going to put on a leveling kit, aluminum wheels and a little bigger tires, and possibly a chrome grille and bumper from an XLT? Not sure yet. Oh, and the cap is going as soon as I can sell it, it doesn't even fit the truck right.

I guess in 2009 they mercifully killed off the 3.0 (I've never heard a good thing about it from anyone), which left only the 4.0 and 2.3.

I bought a transmission for the truck last night- place on ebay had a used one with 45K on it that I've been watching, and they put it on special for $200 less than the original asking price so I bought it. Gonna have my FIL's mechanic put it in for me, I think...I just don't have enough room in my garage (plus the place I bought it from gives you a 6 month warranty as long as it's installed by a professional mechanic).

5.0 swap would be awesome but not looking to invest that much money in this truck. It's getting the transmission replaced, a 2" lift, Rancho shocks and probably some 32x11.5's on new wheels, some maintenance parts and that's probably about it.

It does have a limited slip, 3.73 geared 8.8 out back :D Though I wouldn't be surprised if the LS is toasted at 172K. I just changed the gear oil in the rear diff and I'm pretty sure it was the original factory oil.

People can say what they want about the 3.0L Vulcan.....that engine was both reasonable on fuel and out right unkillable.

...and hey, if someome really wanted to address the power, Whipple used to make a nice little bolt on blower for the 3.0L

loved mine. Convert your auto hubs to manual (via knocking some plastic out). Watch your IAT sensor and the coil packs. Everything else runs forever. Look at Treadwright for some nice 31" re-ttreads that will do it well when paired with some AL O-windows from a 'sploder

Only thing I ever heard about the 3.0 was that it got the same mileage as the 4.0 with less power. *shrugs*

I had treadwrights on my old truck but I'm not sure if I want to get them again or not, they didn't wear very well.

Also I thought I heard you can't convert the new new ones to manual hubs.
