If it's not one thing it's another since I put this car on the road. Now my oil pressure gauge is spiking off the scale when it starts up for awhile. And yes the instrument voltage regulator is new as well as the sending unit.

Do 289's have an internal bypass on the oil pump that could be sticking shut?

If you just have the stock gauge in the car I would test the oil pressure first. Go out and get a manual oil pressur gauge kit with the plastic hose and see what the oil pressure really is, then go from there.

i agree with tom, get a good reading on the pressure first. and yes the oil pump does have a bypass. also do you get a lifter noise when this happens?

Doesn't the oil filter have a bypass?

Might just wanna change the filter first.

I have a ticky lifter right at startup that was present before this issue. No consitent noise. Wouldn't a stuck bypass making more pressure keep lifters from making noise?

I hadn't thought of that. Is the filter downstream of the sender?

I believe the filter is between the pump and sender in most applications.

So, if this true a clogged filter would cause a lower pressure reading. Right?

No, the oil filter has a bypass in it, so if it was clogged or defective and bypassing, oil pressure would go straight from the pump to the sender.

It's probably a long shot, but for about $6 you can find out.

I would check the pressure first with a mechanical guage, but if it is too high when cold it is the OIL PUMP PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE, not the filter.

So now what?!
