first off, i just put on a mac o/r pro chamber and flowmaster american thunder cat back and it sounds awesome. nice throaty idle, no drone whatsoever and none of the dreaded "popping on decel" thing. my only problem is i think i have an exhaust leak. i bought my mustang completely unmolested, so it still has the stock headers and has never been torn into. since i bought it, i noticed a slight gurgling/ticking sound, almost like a diesel engine. it was so quiet that you almost couldn't even hear it. now with the new exhaust, it's much louder. it sounds like a gurgling/ticking/diesel sound. it doesn't quicken or get louder with RPM, but it gets louder with increased load and if i completely let off the throttle, it dissapears completely. could this be a header leak? it's pretty annoying and i'd like to get rid of it. thanks, nate

got the same problem with my custom h pipe and mac unequals.

i noticed it when i still had my stock headers and custom h pipe but it was barely noticable. Thanks exhaust shop.

with the headers now, the leak is bad. i even used some high temp exhaust silicon but it didnt seal it 100%. it sounds bad like you described untill its fully heated up then it seals up then its barely noticeable.

i'm gonna cutup the h pipe to get it to fit perfect.

find out where its leaking from. put your hand near the connections and see if you can feel any air come out.

you can try that high temp silcone on the ball and socket connections if its not that bad

If the sound doesn't increase in speed with an increase in rpm's, it doesn't sound like an exhaust leak.

yeah that's what i was thinking. it doesn't seem like it increases in speed, but i only accelerate in a short range of the rpm(1200 - 1900), so i could be wrong. but does the load thing sound like an exhaust leak? if i'm accelerating up to 65 it's there and the more throttle i give it, the louder it is, but if i reach 65 and let off the throttle it dissapears completely

edit - oh and dan, it doesn't go away when it's warmed up. it's the same from dead cold to operating temps.

Hmmm......... only heard when under part throttle, and not when you let off......... could be pinging. Try running a higher octane tank of gas and see if it still happens. What is your timing set at at the distributor?

i've never experienced pinging yet but i believe it will increase with engine speed correct? shouldnt that rule it out?

Hmm.... must have had a brain fart here. Yea it should more or less increase with engine rpm. However I don't think it's gonna be constantly meshed with rpm. Pinging is a random thing, meaning on one compression stroke, you might get it, and on the next, you might not. I've had pinging before that didn't increase the same rate as engine rpm. Really weird huh?

gees. i haven't been on i a while...
well, it's deffinitley not pinging. i've heard that before and it's not pinging. when i was looking for mustangs, i had to buy one bone stock (just kind of cheap insurance that it wasn't beat on), so nothing like timing or FP has been messed with and it runs great. i'm gonna go back and reposition everything and try and tighten it up better, so hopefully it will fix it. i did get increased gas mileage tho. i check my mileage on every fill up and before the install i got 19-20 mpg 100% in town and 22-23mpg 30% highway/70% city. well now driving about 50/50, i got 24.3 mpg. so i guess i can't complain. it sounds great at WOT also.

Just to let you know, a mustang (especially the GT) even when BONE STOCK is likely to have major pinging issues. It's due to the crapload of timing that the computer dials in, and the leaner (than the Cobra) fuel tables. I'm not still saying it's pinging, just saying that even stock they have problems with this.

hmmm. ok. i left the pipe off and just tied it up, because i saw no point in connecting it to the pro chamber. do you think that could be it? i guess when i go through it once more i'll connect it to the pro chamber.
