something im missing?

i got my 331 put together but the thing is really really out of time!!! i set the motor tdc....dropped the distributer in with the correct firing order and started it....what am i doing wrong?

Are you sure it was TDC on the compression stroke and not the exhaust? OF course it probably wouldn't even start 180 out , but just throwing out ideas.

thats what i was thinking....how far can the timing be out of whack and the thing still start? lol...maybe a valve is not shutting all the way...some of the header tubes are heating up faster than others...im doing all of this on speed density too!

the way i learned was to have 2 people. take the plug number 4 out (first plug on drivers side, closest to front of car). have them bump it until the compression blows your finger off. you will feel it, wont be a doubt when it blows off your finger.

then set the distributor in with the rotor pointed at the number 4 cylinder. if its off a tooth each way, you can go by how it sounds turning the engine over.

i learned that way and its worked pretty simply for me a few times.

Yeah, he's wrong. It's #1 on the passenger side that you do that to.

i believe it doesnt matter what cylinder, as long as its at tdc and the rotor is pointed at it.

number 4 is easier for me then number 1. my car runs so it works i guess

doesnt matter which cylinder as long as the rotor button is facing that point inside the distributer cap.
