My car is making a pinging/"metallic rattle" when I give it throttle. I have full exhaust on my car. Do I need to go to a different kind of spark plug? The ones in there now are "Factory spec" from Advanced Auto Parts. Do I need warmer/colder plugs???

Give more info about the noise - when it happens exactly (WOT, part throttle, near idle, at higher RPM's, etc). Also does it happen only in 3rd and OD or in all gears (the lack of shifting control with the AODE complicates things). Any trouble codes? The CEL does not need to be on to have codes stored.

It could be an exhaust leak, detonation from too much timing, too little fuel, heat, dirty sensors, etc.

More info will help the smart folks in here to help you.
Good luck.

The "pinging" happens noticably at almost no throttle through full throttle. And it happens in all gears ( I have an AODE ). It seems to be coming from both sides of my engine. I put headers on about a month ago and you could sort of hear the noise. Since I put the headers on the noise got louder. So I am wondering if the noise could be from carbon build up in the heads.

how old is the fuel filter?

also check your timing

you can try running some seafoam threw the engine. i would suck up about 1/2 the can threw a vaccume line and pour the other 1/2 into the gas tank(clean injectors and lines out)

you can also try cleaning the mas airflow sensor(MAF) if you havnt already

what grade fuel do you use normally?

What timing are you running and have you deleted EGR? Mine pinged like crazy until I reattached my EGR. You also want to recheck the header bolts just to make sure you don't have an exhaust leak. With respect to plugs, I always run 1 heat range colder than stock to be on the safe side since I had a pinging issue earlier.

I am running the factory timing setting, 10* i think is what it is. I also run 87 octane. I have tried to run 89 and 93 but that didnt seem to help at all. I assume running Safoam means that my combustion chambers are dirty as hell, but if I was planning on doing H/C/I this winter should I just deal with it for a few months?
