Speedometer cable

my mustang needs a new speedo cable have any of you put one of these in or have any tips? thanks

Fairly easy...

You need to unbolt it from the rear/side of the tranny, pull the clip off and re-use the speedo gear.

You have to unbolt the cluster from the dash, unplug the light switches for easier access. Once you get the dash piece out of the way remove the cluster, and you will see the cable plugged into the rear of the speedo. You need to squeeze the connector and push in at the same time to release the cable. In can be tricky if you have never done it before, but not really that hard.

Yeah, you need to remove the electronics for sure, as it's hard to thread the cable in through the firewall without seeing where it's and and where it's going. You can get away with undoing only the headlight switch and foglights and leave the hazard/defrost attached and swing the bezel over to the passenger side.

Just to understand better......why do you think you need a new speedo cable? is it making a skeaking kind of noise? Because that can be fixed pretty easy for about $3 bucks and some time.

I have replaced both my speedo cable and speedo gear and I still have a bouncing speedo (must be the speedo head)...???

Anyways when you get to the "unclipping" of the speedo cable I would tie some thin bendable wire or some string to your "new" speedo cable so when you pull out the old cable the new speedo cable will follow right behind it and you can just snap it in. It goes way up in there towards the firewall and it would be hard to negotiate installing it without the "connection" between the new and old cable...

You should get lube with the cable so lube it up...it is a sticky substance.

Now you tell me ..... I just spent $78 to find a Ford cable for my 85 GT. I already spent $20 on a generic POS that didn't fit. Day late and a dollar short.

This is very common in old Fords. I think it's caused mostly by a weak spring in the speedometer its self. Their is a very light sping that pulls the needle back to "zero" when the car isn't moving and I think when it gets weak it lets the needle bounce around some. Not 100% sure if it's the cause, but I'm pretty sure it is.

My speedometer doesn't work at all. How can I tell if it's the cable or the speed sensor?

I'd assume it must be the cable, but I haven't taken anything apart yet...

Mine had a bit of a whistle/whine to it. A little silicone grease and no more problems.

If it bounces as you accelerate and then smooths out then its most likely the cable.

just thought i would throw my .02 in and say that one of the major things that causes the speedo to bounce is the bushing in the head being worn out

the origional speedo cables were slightly too long and this put excess pressure on the bushing, causing it to wear out, which makes the needle wobble a little bit and hit on the cable causing it to bounce. best thing to do for this is either have somebody rebuild the head, or replace it. unfortunately for me, since my car is a ssv, its really hard to find a 160mph speedo, so i had mine rebuilt, works great now though. good luck.
