I am having a periodic stalling problem. When I have driven the car for about 30 min in stop and go traffic it will stall. If I let it sit for about 10 to 15 mins it will start and not show any signs of the issue. I have changed the IAC just to be sure. Also the dealer had it for a couple days could duplicate the problem. It’s happen about 3 to 4 times in the last 3 months. It’s a 98Gt with 142,000 miles also I am getting no idiot lights at all. This is f@#King driving me crazy . Hope some one can help.

A little more description of what happens when the engine dies please ? Does it shudder and shake, then die ? Does it just cut out and its suddenly off with no shake ? How does the car feel when the engine dies out ?

When it dies and I try and restart it will either not crank at all or it will crank chatter and if I get off the clutch it will roll a few feet and die. But like I said after about 10 15 mins of letting it sit it will start like nothing happened and I can let it sit at idle it never die. Then maybe a week are two later it will happen again.

I don't really have enough experience to tell you whats wrong with the car but I can offer some help as to start trouble shooting it. If I had to guess I'd say it was an ignition problem. The fact that it wont even crank some times is weird tho. Check the voltage and amperage at the battery. Do the gauges do a full sweep every time you turn the car on ? If so you may need a new battery. Check to make sure your alternator is charging properly. I don't really know how to diagnose the ignition system on the 4.6L motors, sorry.

Big Baby:

Rusty67 is sending you on the right path, imo. Couple things to look at:

* loose ground. Grounds are fairly common problems with older vehicles. Corrosion or a poor connection will cause trouble. At the battery, look at the connections very carefully. If you see "green" stuff, that's corrosion and a sign that the cable may be in poor shape.

* How old is your battery? It may have a loose plate or it may just be heading south.

* Look at the crank position sensor. You'll have to lift the A/C compressor but it's just loosening 3 long bolts and holding the compressor out of the way with some heavy string or a bent coat hanger. The sensor is exposed to oil and is magnetic and can pick up crud over time. It's worth pulling out, wiping down, and confirming it is OK. Also, check the wiring harness. The belt comes close to it and may have made a small cut in the wire.

* Is your gas tank above 1/3? The fuel pump is much happier with some liquid sitting on it. Old fuel pumps don't like to be naked, in particular. Check the wiring to the pump and confirm it is OK. If your fuel filter has 15 or 20k, it's time to think about a new one.

* Check the little signal wires to the two coil packs. Take the plugs off and look for corrosion. Clean with a toothpick and put a tiny dab of dielectric grease on each metal contact and reinstall the plug.

That's about all I can offer at the moment.

HTH,

Chris
