standard to an automatic

I have had my 05 for almost a year and am getting tired of the 5 speed stick shift. I mainly got a stick cause I know it would last longer than an auto.
Heres my question; If I could find an automatic tranny and flywheel and shifter to put in it what else would I need or are the wireing harness' different and or other needs to be done.
:D

it is much easier to convert to manual than manual to automatic. I not sure if the same driveshaft would fit either. I wouldn't try to convert it. Think about resale.

well i can tell you that there is a gentleman over here in the UK who did the same thing (Manual to Auto) and his brainbox does not like it at all! He has tried SOOOOO many things to get it to work.. no tune can correct it apparently. I dont know what he is attempting to do now but he is seriously contemplating going back to MANUAL...

Man, that's gonna be expensive! Are you sure you don't want to trade it in? I can think of so many things you will need and so many problems you'll undoubtedly run into.

You may run into warranty problems doing the tranny swap.

Sell it. It should be easy to sell a manual trannie and you'll get a lot more than trading it in.

Then go buy a new 06 or 07 auto tranny Stang.

anthony05gt did an auto to manual swap. he would have the best advice for you. i agree with the others above. trade the car, it will cost you less and give you less of a headache.

very interesting thread steedastang. thanks.
It is starting to sound like to much trouble and if they change out a whole bunch of electronics then it won't be worth it.

thanks for everyones input.
I do love my mustang to much to trade her in, I saw an auto in the paper the other day perty cheap and dremt for a minute of having two. :rlaugh: :)
boy would my wife flip out.:D :rlaugh: :rlaugh:

Ok, here goes. You will need a large portion of the wiring harness, mainly from the pcm to the tranny, an automatic powertrain control module, transmission cooler and lines, transmission, complete with sensors, convertor, spacer plate, shifter, cable, flex plate, transmission shift selector. I'm sure there are a few more things that I'm not thinking of right now. It can be done with a concerted effort. I've got all of the parts that came out of my car except the wiring harness and the pcm. I was able to do the auto to manual swap while retaining the auto harness. I turned the pcm in for a core. If you are serious about this, it ain't brain surgery. I'll sell you everything I have on the cheap! It all has 4k miles on it. You will not need a driveshaft or crossmember. Once the changeover is completed, you will have to drive (in failsafe mode) to a dealer and have the new pcm set up to recognize your keys.

Cliff Notes:::
In other words its not worth it unless your willing to work hard at it.

Some would say that. I did the opposite swap and enjoyed every minute of it. I'm not too excited when I hear about changing substantial sections of wiring harness though. But on the other hand, whoever does it first will be the first which is nice recognition. I was the first to do the opposite swap and have had thousands of people read my "how to" manual which was a bigger pain in the ass to create than the actual work was.

For the record, I wouldn't do the manual to auto swap because it is a little over the top.

Sounds like if you can get the parts for something reasonable and you do the install yourself it might be worth it. But if you're thinking about paying a shop to do the swap, forgetaboutit, sell your manual and buy an auto.

You are exactly right. I'd sell him all he needs to do it for $1500. He would then have to buy a pcm and some wiring harness sections. You're talking about $2500 total, then he could sell his old tranny and parts and get most of that back. I mean damn, the hydraulic line for the clutch alone is worth $400 new. He's not going to do it.

Easier and cheaper to trade. I used to drive nothing but manuals. A bad back, arthritis, and numerous other problems that qualify me for a handicapped parking permit force me to drive an automatic.
I get strange looks from people when they see my 05 Mustang in a handicapped parking place. But I love my car, I don't have that many problems with an automatic and I legally have the permit.

It would be tempting if I had my own shop and the warranty was over and I had nothing to do.
I use to build transmissions back in the early 80's so I'm very familiar as to what is involved. it aint like the old days when it was easier to do, just needed a little vacuum back then. :)
Anthony Thanks again u have been very helpful. :)

Hey if you want I will trade you mine, I have an 05 Mustang gt stock, mineral grey auto, and I want to do the same thing, switch it to manual trans. I have 33,000 miles on it, and its in great shape,
