opened mIRC.
found the DalNet server.
typed /join #stangnet

said i didnt/couldnt join.

no need to pay anything. there are other irc clients out there but mirc is the easiest to use for most people

hmm....its been a while since i used it. i use xchat since i cant get mirc to work with linux for some reason. maybe one of these guys with mirc will chime in and help you out. it should automatically want to connect to a channel or there should be a button at the top that says connect

go to the top menu bar, click on favorites, click "more" at the bottom of the list, then type in the menu #stangnet and there u go!

If you use Firefox and want a really simple, free IRC client,
ChatZilla is a good option.

Open Firefox, Install ChatZilla. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/16/

After you install the ChatZilla add on / extension:

Click on Tools, ChatZilla. When the window loads type two commands:
1. /attach dalnet (this connects you to dalnet)
2. /join #stangnet (this loads the stangnet room)
