on the stickys here it says i need a 28oz balance for my 351 swap but autozone says there replacement 351's are a 50oz balance. can someone( who has done the swap maybe) tell me which one i need for sure.

Follow the recommendation of what ever motor you are buying, not knowing who there motor source it it could be either. I am sure the motor will come with paperwork.

I think it's safe to say that, as usual, Autozone is clueless!

ALL 351W motors are 28oz balanced from the factory. I highly doubt that a high volume rebuilder is going to take the extra time, and cost to re-balance the crank to 50oz.

I would try to obtain the name of their rebuilder, and contact them directly to get the straight answer.

All 351s are 28. there is now way they spent the extra money to rebalance the motor. I just dont see that happening. If they give you extended warantee then do as they wish. The best thing to do would be call they company that remans there engines they would know.

I had a customer bring me a autostore replacement 351W that was 50oz a few years back...not sure what parts store it came from.

The 351W should be 28oz but like everyone has mentioned follow the paperwork/warranty that comes with the motor. Then if there are any issues you have it all to back you up.

look man if they dont even know the factory balance of there engines I wouldnt even consider buying one from them, RUNAWAY and never look back I just dont believe they have spent all that time and money to change it to a 50. I have seen bulk rebuilds with different size cylinder bores, They feeding you some BS probally based on the year of the application, FIND A REPUTABLE BUILDER OR WASTE YOUR MONEY.

they're not telling you that you need a 50oz because of the year of your car are they?

If it's a 351W, it's a 28oz. 5.0s take a 50oz.

If you put the wrong balance fly wheel on, it'll vibrate like hell. Bad idea.

Yeah i wouldnt listen to autozone they give me the wrong information all the time. what is said above i would agree with .:SNSign:

Auto Part stores on the computer treat the 5.0 and 5.8 as the same. It is a mistake in the system. Lets be honest if the guy behind the counter can read what ever that Stupid Box tells them is what they suggest. Part store using a Human for information ended in the 80's thanks Computers. LOL
28 oz is the correct balance but to throw a balancer in the mix I have seen some new cranks using a 50oz balancer for the 351 so that you can use your old balancer and flywheel. If the company that is rebuilding the engines is using those you now know the story.
