OK - So when it comes to mechanics I aint the smartist....... so lets have some ideas please. My '68 starts up cold an absolute treat, no problems at all.

But sometimes when I stop - on firing her up - its like the battery is completely dead, she turns over really really slowly - then just when you think it time to get the jump leads out ......all of a sudden .... turns over real quick, fires up and away we go.

She is quite tempermental, & does not do it all the time - but you can almost guarantee that if there is number of onlookers watching .... she'll decides its time to mess me about again.

What do you think?

Several possibilities.

-bad starter

-bad solenoid

-bad ground

-bad starter leads

-dirty battery terminals

Hot starter, too. Do you run headers and have a conventional starter (i.e., not a mini starter)?

That's the same reason I mentioned the starter. I replaced my last one because of the same symptoms. I replaced it with a Bosch high torque starter about two years ago and haven't had a problem since. As you say, the mini starter is still probably the best fix.

Yep - its a conventional starter - where's the best place to get a mini-starter for a classic mustang?

It's not the soleniod, Sounds like the starter is drawing to much amps. I would put on a "mini" just because they are made for this kinda thing. But at the same time make sure that you change all the battery cables and ck the ground to the block and to the firewall. Most of the time these cables are 20 years old or older and can cause all kinds of gremlins.

Got my Mini from Jegs

starter shock....heat from the headers zaps the starter...get some header rap or some protective shield for the starter or a mini starter as stated
