just replaced flywheel and starter on 84 coupe with a 5.0 in it .. but the motor and trans are 86 model but its carb'd but anyway ... u hit the key and the starter and flywheel are tearing at eachother ... what could be some other things i can try to fix this annoying problem ... thanks guys
What starter...mini or stock? Auto or stick car? If an auto what transmission and flex plate? If a stick then what tranny, bell housing and what flywheel? The more information you post up the more we can help.
84 lx coupe mustang ... 5spd. car with 86 and up internals besides the fuel injection .. full roller with t5 trans. with 157 tooth flywheel and standard starter not mini ...
The first thing that comes to mind is that the starter may be for a 164 tooth flywheel...maybe. The 84 and 86 5.0 cars both used a 157 tooth flywheel and came with a 5-speed. Hopefully the starter and flywheel are of the 157 tooth variety.
Is the starter staying engaged or is there just clatter when you start the car? The only other thing I can think of other than some kind of mechanical misalignment due to incorrect parts is that the starter just has a problem. Yeah, I know...REAL insightful huh? Sorry for not having any more ideas.
Are you sure you have the correct starter for the application? If you're using the 84 starter with an 86 flywheel, you may encounter problems because of the differing flywheel sizes between the two years. 84 used a 10 inch flywheel, 86 used a 10.5 inch.
From what I can tell starter is the same. The geometry difference is made up in the different bellhousings that locate the starter. Both flywheels are 157 tooth.
If everything is the correct year and size and such, sounds weird but when I put my motor back in the starter kept on grinding, I turned the engine to a different location via socket and ratchet on the dampener and all was good after that, no more grinding. Not sure why but it worked.
ive talked to a lot of people about this problem ... and everyone i have talked to is telling my my timing is too far advanced causing the noise i'm encountering ... i just replaced the starter again a few days ago and when i pulled that one out the nose cone was broke in two ... i guess they think the flywheel is rotating backwards bc of the timing being so advanced but i dont know ... i know its a 157 teeth and the starter has to be right bc its the same part number i used before from autozone ... and that one was fine ... and theres no way the bellhousing could just warp and when u pull the coil wire off and try to start it the engagement is fine ... when u give it fire it starts doin it again .. so it has to be a timing issue instead of a mech. problem ... rite???
If you pull the coil wire and it is engaging like it should then it may be something to look into. You need to pull the distributor and put the motor up on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder aka TDC. I would not trust your damper to truely find TDC as they are notorious for being incorrect unless you have already indexed it.
