i had a bad starter and it keep frinding and missing. it was horrible. so i bought an autolite and installed it and it started the car. it turns over good but after ignition it clunks and grinds. so i had it fluch and shimmed it 1/64, then 1/32, then 1/16. i kept it 1/16 cause it clunks the least but it still does what do you guys suggest? maybe put some thick washers? do mustangs have a certain gap?

Most starter clearances are between .010~.030 from what I've seen. I've only rebuilt one starter in my life so I'm by no means an expert on the matter (It was even a delco remy at that). IMHO buy a reman starter. There is a reason why noone rebuilds them anymore.
