starter problem...searched already

alright, its not on my car but on my room mates 92 gt. when you turn the key the starter starts the car...but it wont disengage or stop trying to start the car even with the key out. unhook the battery cable and it stops, hook it back up and it doesnt try to start until you turn the key. i switched the solenoid off of my car onto his to see if that was the problem and it did the same thing. there is 12.5 volts across the solenoid so im pretty sure that is not the problem. any help here would be appreciated since he has to drive the car on friday and we only have nights to work on it. also, when the car is off and the starter is still going if you pull the little connector off of the solenoid the starter doesnt stop it just keeps turning the motor over.

alright, well after reading a couple posts by jr and hissin, i ran out to put a test light on the car and check the little wire that clips to the top of the solenoid. no light when the key is off, no light when the key is on. but the car still starts which leads me to believe that the starter switch on the column is good. but wouldnt taking that wire off of the solenoid cause the starter to stop? the starter was rebuilt a year ago so i dont really think its that.

see im not sure...its hard to diagnos that kind of thing....well for me anyways. i just need some direction to start looking before it gets too late and i get one too many beers in me

You have a short. From ignition switch to solenoid. The wiring is shorted to ground. Ignition switch is not the key switch. Check the start circuit by finding out what color wire it is and tracing it through all the connectors. The ignition switch is located down in the steering shaft housing under the dash. Look for frayed wires.

Its about impossible to get a straight answer out of anyone here on the forums....but I'll help you out as much as possible.

I work for a company that has TONS of Fords....(bet ya cant figure out who )

It may be that the starter is bad. I see a lot of these and have seen one almost burn down a truck because the customer ran off when he saw smoke. Anyway, it sounds like the bendix is staying engaged. The bendix is what pushes the starter gear onto the flywheel. However.....did anyone hook anything up to the starter solenoid recently? If it just started happening out of the blue, and you've done nothing to the car.....I'm gonna bet the bendix in the starter is bad. One way to tell for sure, pull it off....take it to Autozone and have them check it. I hope this helps you out....if not let me know.

thats what someone else has told me also. but i wont be taking it to autozone since i work for advance auto...haha. guess its time to get down and dirty at night and test it tomorrow at work. thanks for the help guys...ill check for frayed wires also.

I had the same problem the starter relay is sticking its on the drivers side inner fender if it happens again just bang the relay or just replace it.

thats the thing, i replaced it with the one off of my car which is good and it still did the same thing. its got to be the starter because even if i unplug the small connector on the solenoid the starter still turns over...leading me to believe that it doesnt have anything to do with the lock cylinder or the starter switch..but the solenoid or the starter. well...the solenoid is fine because it did the same thing with mine....so its the starter. a little drunk deductive reasoning actually works eh?

What is that supposed to mean? we are helping somone trouble shoot their problem through a computer, without being able to see,hear,or touch the car we try to give options that may have been overlooked or untried as of yet.
