Starting problems, any ideas?

Recently my starter went out so I replaced it and the car started fine for about a week. Then it just stopped starting completely and I would jiggle the terminal cables and sometimes it would start. I replaced the new starter again, cleaned the terminals real good, replaced all connections going to the terminals, replaced grounds coming from the battery to the block and frame, I had my battery jumped and tested, and still nothing. Also, when trying to start all I hear is the clicking from the solenoid but no sound from the actual starter. Is there anything else I can try that could be a possibility? Also our cars only have one solenoid right? and thats the one on the starter, because some doofus at autozone told me it had 2 but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Yeah, one starter solenoid.

Start by checking all the wires to startor and battery cables. Make sure they are all tight and not corroding.

The starter solenoid clicking could mean a problem with either the battery, the starter solenoid contacts or the starter motor connections.

The starter interlock circuit has a slave relay to the trigger input on the piggyback solenoid. Said another way, the signal goes through a SPST relay and then to the solenoid. The slave relay is in the underhood fusebox.


If you have a known good battery, connect a jumper cable in parallel with all of your existing cables, one at a time. After each connect, try to start it. When it starts all of a sudden, you've found the bad cable. And when you parallel the battery cables, be sure to clamp onto the battery post itself (not just the cable's connector, because a bad cable to post connection will keep the jumper cable from having decent continuity to the battery itself. This applies to jump starting the car too. If you were not clamped to the positive battery post itself, the jump-start test was invalid).
