Over the past few months, my car will only give me a pronounced, single click when I turn the key on the odd occasion. The loud click comes from the right side of the engine compartment. Obviously, this is the starter solenoid. The problem is this is the only thing that happens when I turn the key. I leave the car alone for a while, and it starts up like nothing was wrong.
The past two days, the car has done the clicking more than the starting. So, I went out and purchased a new starter. Yesterday, it started right up. Today, the clicking.
I got my wife to turn the key for me while I was around the block. There is a secondary "electrical" sound coming from the front, right corner of the engine compartment. You can't hear it from inside the car. It appears to be from a box, with "Bosch" on it, and it has four small, black tubes conected to the top of it. There is also a large bundle of wires conected to the top of this box. This appears to be the offending sound maker.
Now, the starter is brand new, so the starter and the solenoid are out of the question. I checked the starter relay and it clicks when connected directly to the battery. The key/ignition is fine because everything else works. The battery checks out just fine. I even hooked my wifes car up to mine with jumpers just to be sure and the clicking still happens.
According to the wiring diagram in my Haynes, the alarm/anti-theft module is in the circut between the steering column and the starter motor. As well, so is the clutch position switch.
I can not find ANYTHING in the Haynes about the location of the anti-theft module. Does anyone know if it is in the front right of the engine compartment, and would it cause what I just described above, if it was in fact bad?
From how I read the wiring diagram, if the power is interupted through the anti-theft module, then the starter relay and consequently the starter solenoid would get interupted/no power. This might explain the single, loud click from the starter solenoid.
Again, I would appreciate any input anyone has on this, as I am about to pull my own hair out.
