Starting Question

Would the ccrm cause the starter not to start the car at all given that all the other components of the starting circuit are in perfect order. The starter wont turn over for anything.

No, the only thing it could kill is the fuel pump.

The only thing stopping the starter from cranking is the ignition switch, clutch pedal or lever for auto transswitch, & anti-theft (if present). Of course, if the constant 12V and ground are not present to the starter, taht would do it as well.

Scott's right (I'd add that some EEC relay circuitry goes through the CCRM too, IIRC). The starting circuit is academic - no computer input is needed.

And to head-off confusion, we're only talking about getting an engine to turn over. You can make the engine crank over by making one jumped connection, without needing a computer, the key in the ignition, etc.

Now to get it to catch (actually run) definately requires computer and CCRM assistance.

Good luck.

Well since you were the only one to reply i will have to direct this at you then. I have been racking my brain on my car for the past two months trying to figure this problem out. The only reason it has taken this long is because im in the Army stationed as a recruiter so my car fixing time is limited. But i checked everything that could be checked within the starting circuit itself and i kept coming back to the same thing the ignition switch and the ccrm. Now since i didnt think that the ccrm was in the starting circuit i pretty much disregarded that and worked on the other things. Replaced the starter, neg battery cable which was corroded, checked the ign switch by the chiltons manual, and bought a new battery. All of these things you would think would fix the problem but no it didn't. Finally i did some searching on the forums for a ccrm wiring diagram. Found one and low and behold the only thing that i could find that would have caused it would have been the ccrm. Long story short the ccrm in my car was bad causing the starter not to do a damn thing. So a trip to the ford dealership and $160 later the car starts just fine now. My only problem now is that i have to put the tranny back in :)

Maybe Scott (the other guy who replied) can shed some insight. I remember no connection between the CCRM and the starter function. Like I said, if it cranked but would not catch, the CCRM could be at fault. But just to crank - I can do that on a gutted car with just a jumped connection on the starter solenoid.

You have piqued my interest now - post more about the initial issues you were having? The motor wouldnt even crank? In order to assimilate this into our arsenal of fixes, we need to understand it completely (which is what I think you were trying to do - post the solution to help people out in the future. Good on ya for that. :nice: ).

And we're glad to hear it's fixed for you. :nice:

Thats why the forums are in place right, to help out.

1. initial onset of the problem started out with a intermittent no start issue. i would hit the key and nothing would happen. My first thought at this point was that the flywheel was screwed and not meshing right with the starter. i would leave the car in gear e-brake down and rock the car a little and then hit the key again and the car would start. so naturally i chalked it up as the flywheel.

2. then it got to the point that it wouldnt do anything. i would hear a click when i turned the key but the starter wouldnt turn. solenoid was clicking but wasnt doing anything. needless to say i started to throw money at the problem. lucky for me the things that i replaced actually needed it during the course of this whole thing so, yay for me.

got the chiltons manual out and checked everything in the starting circuit.
1. battery - took to advance tested bad = replaced
2. starter - pulled it out and found one of the solenoid bolts worked itself loose = replaced it
3. pulled wiring loom from the starter all the way to the battery. continuity checked all wires in the loom neg battery cable was corroded = replaced
4. ignition switch - checked it in all positions by the manual - checked out ok
5. checked all fuses - first thing i did = all were good.

now by this time i was pretty pissed off and at my wits end. decided to do some side work and pull the tranny and replace that stupid throwout bearing that likes to chirp all the time. did this all laying on the ground with no air tools by the way. not the recommended way but have to make due with what you got right. anyway, then decided to rebuild the tranny since she is having some trouble too.

needless to say i didnt rebuild the tranny cause the starting problem was still pissing me off. so i started to search the forums for anything related to the ccrm and its function. found a post that has a pic of the ccrm and a wiring layout for all the pins. started to pick through that and the only thing that i could think of was that when i hit the key the power going though the eec relay was shorted and wasnt supplying full power to the starter. at least this was my thinking and my limited knowledge of the electrical system.

disconnected the ccrm all together and hooked up a remote start switch and the car would crank with no problem. hooked the ccrm back up and nothing would happen. so bought a new ccrm and it ran like a raped date. couldnt run it too long cause i still dont have the tranny in it and no exhaust. needless to say it was pretty loud.

if you have any other questions feel free to ask. i know i rambled there for a bit but im just relieved that i found the problem.

Yeah i saw the eec relay in the ccrm but I have no clue how the eec relay in the ccrm interacts with the pcm.

I have no pinout of the PCM, which is really irritating b/c it would make diagnosing these strange electrical problems much easier....anyone have one???

That's very interesting and completely new to me. Thanks for sharing it.

I still dont see the connection with the CCRM or EEC relay, but will remember your situation for guys in the future.
