Steering play

I was just wondering if it was charectoristic to have about 2 inches of play in your steering in a classic mustang? or how many of you have play in your steering thanks

I have almost 3 inches in mine. You can adjust the play at the steering box. There is a stud/screw with a nut locking it down, on the top of the steering box. Loosen the nut and tighten the screw. The play should lessen but if you go too much it will tighten the rest of the steering which is bad. The correct way to do it is jack up the car so the wheels are off the ground and work the wheel left and right. If it's too tight it will feel like it is binding when you turn the wheel most of the way left or right.
